The 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Grands Classiques, a blend of 70% Grenache, 15% Cinsault, 10% Syrah and 5% Mourvèdre, spent six months in new oak, but you'd hardly know it from this wine's lovely, detailed red fruit. Cherries, raspberries and stone fruit roll across the full-bodied palate in creamy waves, backed by supple tannins and just a bit of dried spices on the finish. Reviewed by: Joe Czerwinski

A warm-climate red giving generous, high-alcohol wines of red fruit and spice. It anchors southern Rhone blends and old-vine wines in Spain and Australia.

Syrah (Shiraz) produces dark, powerful reds with black fruit, pepper and smoked-meat notes. It yields elegant, perfumed wines in the northern Rhone and bold, rich styles in Australia.
