Review: “The 2016 Anjou Terre de Grès displays a straw-yellow color and a pure, crystalline bouquet. Rich and intensely fruity on the palate (potted pears), this Chenin Blanc reveals a firm mineral, crystalline structure combined with a soft but elegant and balanced texture. The finish is long, crystalline and salty as well as aromatic and full of tension, but the wine doesn't give up its filigreed nature. This is a beautiful Chenin Blanc from Géraldine and Xavier Cailleau. It combines perfectly ripe and natural fruit with the crystallinity and vibrancy of the terroir. Founded in 1219 by the Saint Jean d’Angers hospital and owned by the Cailleau for five generations, the 24-hectare Château de Bois-Brinçon is an excellent biodynamic producer of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chenin Blanc as well as Gamay and Pineau d'Aunis in the center of the Anjou region. Xavier studied and worked in Libourne, in particular Saint-Émilion, and with Jean-Michel Deiss at Marcel Deiss in Alsace. He and his wife Géraldine Cailleau have farmed their 24 hectares biodynamically for 30 years and aim for terroir, especially soil-dominated wines. On the website of their US importer Schatzi Wines, Xavier is quoted as saying, ‘The Anjou region is a mosaic of very varied and rich terroirs. Being at the junction of the Armorican Massif and the Paris Basin, the Bois-Brinçon vineyards offer a rare diversity of soils and landscapes spread over six communes and eight different terroirs.’ The domaine’s key soils include several types, mainly volcanic rhyolite and spilite, marne and grès, as well as up to 120+-year-old vines. Winemaking here means accompanying the wines ‘without useless and traumatic interventions’ and leads to rich yet refined and soulful red, white and sparkling wines with beautiful finesse and tenderness. Highly recommended.”
