"The 2021 Pinot Noir Vino de Los Ranchos is a very pretty, vibrant Pinot Noir. Dark red fruit, lavender, rose petal, spice and leather give the 2021 its beguiling, mysterious personality. There's a lot of wine here, but the 2021 needs time in bottle to be at its best. Today, the youthful tannins are pretty imposing. I was deeply impressed with this set of wines from Scar of the Sea. Mikey and Gina Giugni source fruit from a number of top vineyards in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo, many of them old-vine sites, for this range of wines. It’s hard to know where to start, but I especially liked the 2021 Alicante Bouschet Galleano Ranch and 2021 Syrah Bassi Vineyard, both of which show how compelling this vintage is shaping up to be. The Scar of the Sea wines are done with minimal handling and offer notable transparency, not to mention tons of character." |
