“The 2021 Mainqué Chardonnay is the second white here, produced by Jean-Marc Roulot from 40-year-old ungrafted vines in Mainqué in the Lunita property (where they regrafted the vines to Chardonnay), where they work with cover crops, no chemicals, and bees. It fermented with indigenous yeasts, 70% in French oak barrels and 10% each in clay, concrete egg and stainless steel, and it matured for nine months, 70% in barrel and 10% each in concrete and stainless steel. It has the precision and purity of Roulot, which to a certain extent is the result of thorough work with the press. ‘He sent us the press program,’ Piero told me. ‘And we now have two presses. We are learning.’ When I thought about what was in common between the reds and the whites, I came up with three words: precision, purity and elegance. It has notes of white flowers and a touch of fennel and other aromatic herbs. It was harvested early in the morning and in the season, and the wine is light and refreshing, ethereal, weightless and with purity and precision. It's a delight. It has a very focused bouquet of black fruit infused with graphite/pencil lead scents, a touch of brine emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with a smooth texture that belies a firm backbone. Quite stern at the moment – maybe it’s just closed up as the winter descends – but I admire its marine-tinged finish. The 2017 is the eighth harvest of pinot meunier composition for this beautiful cuvée and it is another gorgeous young wine. The bouquet is bright, pure and complex, offering up scents of tangerine, apple, brioche, chalky soil tones, lavender, acacia blossoms and just a hint of oak in the upper register. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, crisp and deep at the core, with lovely transparency and grip, pinpoint bubbles, precise focus, seamless balance and a very, very long, refined and complex finish. This wine overperforms, considering the challenges of this vintage that saw extreme weather, from spring frost to scorching summer temperatures. These vineyard sites performed better than most. "The 2017 Barolo Coste di Rose has bright aromatics of candied raspberry, apricot, anise, and dusty earth. Drink 2024-2040.<!--more-->The G.D. Vajra estate is based within the commune of Barolo, where Giuseppe and Aldo Vajra helm the winemaking responsibilities. Giuseppe, who took more of a leadership role in 2008, has been instrumental in continuing to develop the family estate, while Isonzo Vajra leads in vineyard management. Most recently they have completed the expansion of their cellar space, and they are also releasing their wines a touch later to allow the additional time in bottle to soften any harsh edges. "The 2017 Barolo Coste di Rose is pretty, supple and inviting. Some of the tannins need to resolve, but this is a young Barolo after all. The Coste di Rose doesn't have the sensuality of the Albe or the pedigree of the Viole, but it nevertheless has so much to give. Crushed flowers, sweet red berry fruit, mint, crushed rocks and sage are some of the many notes that linger. "Pale, green-tinged yellow. Fresh pear, white peach and orange zest on the nose, with honeysuckle and mineral notes adding lift. Bright and sharply focused in the mouth, offering incisive citrus and orchard fruit flavors complemented by suggestions of fennel and quinine. Smoothly melds power and vivacity and finishes very long and nervy, showing outstanding clarity and minerally persistence. (Drink between 2021-2027)" ​93 Josh Raynolds, Vinous

"The barrel-fermented Godello 2018 Pezas Da Portela has a more golden color and a creamy nose, spicy and somehow flinty, not oaky. It fermented and matured with lees and bâtonnage in French barriques for six months. The palate reveals complex flavors; it's nuanced with a mixture of mineral and gunpowder-like notes with notions of tangerine peel, quince paste and dried flowers, with yellow rather than white fruit. This comes from a myriad of small plots in the village of Portela, where the family Prada Gayoso originated. Serious, seamless and expressive Godello. 8,000 bottles produced. It rested in tank for one year before it was bottled in February 2020. Vinas Serranas El Canchorral 2019, 0.75L

"The 2019 El Canchorral is a blend of Calabrés (Garnacha), Aragonés (Tempranillo), Verdejo Negro, Rufete Blanco, Palomino, Moscatel and other grapes planted 85 years ago on degraded pink granite soils. This is the only wine that ferments with 100% full clusters. It has a lot of white grapes and is more floral, with less alcohol (it's 13.5% even in this riper year), more acidity and a lower pH. It is more floral à la Fleury and very expressive, as they can use very low doses of sulfur in this wine given its higher natural acidity (possibly because of the white grapes). This comes from a very old vineyard, and the varieties feel very integrated and complement each other. It comes through as complex and nuanced, a little riper and showier than the 2018. The palate reflects the effect of the stems in the vinification a little. All of these single-vineyard wines matured in used oak barrels for some 15 months in 2019. "The 2016 Rattlesnake Rock bottling of syrah from Big Basin is one of their estate vineyard bottlings, as these vines were planted in 2000 in this windy parcel that sits between thirteen hundred and fourteen hundred feet above sea level. The 2016 version includes one-third whole clusters, was fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged for twenty-one months in used, three hundred liter barrels. The cépages here includes two percent of viognier that was co-fermented with the syrah. The wine comes in at 13.9 percent octane and offers up a deep and properly reserved bouquet of cassis, black raspberry, grilled meats, pepper, a touch of black olive, fine stony soil tones and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, focused and rock solid at the core, with a superb core of fruit, firm, ripe tannins and outstanding balance and grip on the long, nascently complex and very, very promising finish. There is a strong vein of iron in the soils here and this really comes across on the backend here. This is outstanding syrah in the making, with plenty of structure and outstanding depth of fruit.
