"The bottled 2019 Quintanilla combines the power of the year and the place with 14.68% alcohol and soft acidity. There are more tannins, and it has the chalky sensation of the limestone. It also has notions of ripe berries and the character of this year's wines, keeping the freshness. This is austere and mineral within the ripeness. It comes from a 1.13-hectare plot on limestone and sandstone soils planted in 1951 in the village of Elvillar, a walled, old-vine plot located in what was the 15th-century village of San Lorenzo de Quintanilla. The vineyard tends to produce powerful wines, and its grapes were always used to make the Pagos Viejos. This has some rugged tannins that give it a little rusticity, a character of the plot that tends to get stressed in warmer years. 2,800 bottles produced. "The 2020 Malbec Reserve was produced from vines on limestone soils in Gualtallary (80%) and Altamira (20%) with concentration and elegance. It has 13.8% alcohol and keeps very good freshness and balance. It fermented with natural yeasts, and 75% of the volume matured in oak foudre for 18 months and the rest in raw concrete. They have had the courage to go for their own style, and this wine reflects that, but perhaps it's the most classical of their bottlings. It has ripeness without excess and varietal aromas of violet, iron and blood with an earthy touch and the chalky minerality in the texture. 2020 was a warm and dry vintage, and the wine manages to keep the poise and has the complexity of the noble origin but without the agility of the wines from 2019. 40,000 bottles produced. "Very pale, bright silver-yellow. Pungent yet subtle scents of grapefruit pith, gooseberry and minerals; smells bone-dry. Surprisingly silky and dense yet weightless on entry, then citrussy, dry and penetrating in the middle palate, with an almost metallic impression of minerality adding punch to the grapefruit, lemon and shiso leaf flavors; the wine's complexity reminded me of a top Loire Valley version. Château Samion is the family domaine of Jean‐Claude Berrouet, the man who oversaw more than 40 vintages at the famed Château Petrus in Pomerol from 1964until his retirement in 2007. Together with his son Jean‐Françis, they produce a small amount of wine from their holdings in Lalande‐de‐Pomerol which total a scant1.2 hectares. The first vintage for Château Samion was in 1979 when they rented the vineyards, but since 1985 they have been owned by the Berrouet family and the vines are now an average of 45 years in age. There is but one wine made at Château Samion. The wine is made from 100% Merlot, and one will find it is made in the same manner and with the same exacting care as Château Petrus. The grapes are harvested by hand, and then vinified in concrete vats. Following the vinification, the wine is racked and aged for 20 months in 15% new French oak casks (225 liters). Importer Notes
