A Tribute to Grace Grenache Morro Vineyard 2019, 0.75L
Grenache from Edna Valley, California
"The 2019 Grenache Morro View Vineyard offers tons of immediacy and sheer appeal. The decision to destem all the fruit worked so well here. Forward, bold and racy, the Morro View is one of the many compelling wines in this lineup. Red/purplish berry fruit, blood orange, spice and mint are all kicked up. The Morro View is one of the more resonant, ample wines in this range. (Drink between 2024-2034)" 94 Points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous

A Tribute to Grace Grenache Santa Barbara County 2021, 0.75L
Grenache from Santa Barbara County, California
"The Santa Barbara County Grenache was inspired by Fonsalette from Chateau Rayas. The wine represents two very different microclimates. The first vineyard is the Highlands with 3200 feet elevation. The second vineyard is Curtis which is tucked away in Foxen Canyon. The fruit was destemmed and each lot was fermented separately and aged for 16 months in neutral French oak. The resulting wine is elegantly structured and focused, and is an excellent introduction to Angela’s style." Producer Notes

Accendo Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon 2019, 0.75L
Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley, California
"Accendo's 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is every bit as alluring as it was from barrel. Plush and sensual, with no hard edges, the 2019 possesses magnificent balance from start to finish. Dark-fleshed fruit, spice, leather, tobacco and menthol build as this sumptuous, racy Cabernet shows off its tremendous charm. Best of all, the 2019 offers quite a bit of immediacy. I would choose to drink it ahead of some of the more structured recent vintages. As always, the Accendo Cabernet is a blend of several top sites in Napa Valley. Anthill Farms Cabernet Sauvignon Timbercrest Farms 2019, 0.75L
Cabernet Sauvignon from Dry Creek Valley, California
"Dark red/purple color. This Cabernet Sauvignon is sensual and nuanced, with tremendous textural finesse. Time in the glass brings out a range of black currant, dark blossoms, cedar, warm soil, and spice box aromas. Unlike many California Cabernets, the flavors are nuanced rather than obtuse. They span out across the palate effortlessly, making drinking now a joy with just a little air. Folded tannins and integrated acidity will allow the Timbercrest to easily age and improve for a decade or more. This is only the second vintage of this wine—the first from 2007 still sings when the cork is pulled. 13.8% abv." Producer Notes, Anthill Farms

Anthill Farms Chardonnay Peugh Vineyard 2018, 0.75L
Chardonnay from Russian River Valley, California
"The 2018 Chardonnay Peugh comes from a vineyard originally planted in 1887 and grafted to Chardonnay in 1944. It was made with 20% new Austrian oak and has bright notions of petrichor, lime peel, green herbs and green pineapple with honeyed notes in the background. The palate is medium-bodied and satiny, swelling with savory flavors that are refreshed by mineral accents and lively acidity, and it finishes very long. The dynamic dichotomy of brightness and savory bass tones is compelling and provides a hint of what this may be like with another five years in bottle." 94+ points Erin Brooks, The Wine Advocate

Arietta Cabernet Sauvignon 2019, 0.75L
Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley, California
"The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is brilliant. Deep purple-hued, with incredible cassis and blueberry fruit as well as tobacco, graphite, damp earth, leather, and violets, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a round, layered, seamless texture, ultra-fine tannins, and a great, great finish. This tour de force is going to evolve gracefully for 30 years or more. It's one of the finest wines I've tasted from this estate."98 Points, Jeb Dunnuck
"Arietta's 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is outstanding. It will require a number of years to be at its most expressive and for the bouquet to fully open, but all of that potential is there. Deep, layered and so well balanced, the 2019 is impressive right out of the gate. There is so much to look forward to. Inky dark fruit and a whole range of cooler-climate mineral/savory notes typical of Coombsville punctuate the huge, redolent finish." 96 Points, Antonio Galloni

"Always a standout from this winning combination of site and producer, this is a 100% varietal vineyard-designate, from the cool landscape of Carneros. Rainier cherry, cassis and a dusting of baking spice highlight a seamless body of integrated tannin and oak, the wine offering power but also enduring elegance. Arnot-Roberts Rose 2022, 0.75L
Touriga Nacional / Tinta Cao / Trincadeira / Grenache from California, California
"This lightly-colored, direct-press rosé is at the top of its class, which includes all the great rosés of the world. Arnot-Roberts has single handedly introduced this Portuguese varietal to the greater market for California wine. Though obviously well-known as playing a big part in the blends used to make fine port, it took these young California winemakers to show us what a great rosé it is capable of producing. Beginning with the 2020 vintage, small percentages of Gamay, Cabernet Franc and Grenache have been added to the mix. Touriga Nacional still remains the dominant varietal in the blend."

Arnot-Roberts Syrah Clary Ranch 2017, 0.75L
Syrah from Sonoma Coast, California
"The 2017 Syrah Clary Ranch is striking. Deep and resonant on the palate, the 2017 has so much to say. Some of the angular edges and intense savoriness the Clary Ranch can show have been soften by the intense heat of the year. Silky, fine tannins wrap around a core of dark cherry, plum, lavender, spice and pepper. A Syrah of power and structural intensity, the Clary Ranch is incredibly distinctive, and that is in a lineup in which many of the wines are exceptional. Two thousand-seventeen is a superb vintage for the Clary Ranch Syrah." 96 Points Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Big Basin Vineyards Syrah Rattlesnake Rock 2016, 0.75L
Syrah from Santa Cruz Mountains, California
"The 2016 Syrah Rattlesnake Rock is a powerful wine. Red fruit, iron, chalk, white pepper, game and incisive tannins give the 2016 a real feeling of drive that distinguishes it in the range. This is an especially mineral-driven, savory, taut Syrah, with all the elements in the right place. Dried herbs, licorice and crushed flowers add aromatic intrigue. It will be interesting to see if the 2016 gains a bit more volume in bottle. It is such a promising wine. The Côte-Rôtie selection Syrah from John Alban works so well here." 94 Antonio Galloni, Vinous
"From the home estate in the Santa Cruz Moutains, the 2016 Syrah Rattlesnake Rock is a firm, mineral-laced, yet concentrated and textured Syrah that's going to benefit from bottle age. Red and black fruits, spiced meat, bacon fat, and dried flower notes are just some of its nuances. A concentrated, classic mountain Syrah, it needs 2-3 years of bottle age and will cruise . . ." 94+ Jeb Dunnuck
"The 2016 Rattlesnake Rock bottling of syrah from Big Basin is one of their estate vineyard bottlings, as these vines were planted in 2000 in this windy parcel that sits between thirteen hundred and fourteen hundred feet above sea level. The 2016 version includes one-third whole clusters, was fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged for twenty-one months in used, three hundred liter barrels. The cépages here includes two percent of viognier that was co-fermented with the syrah. The wine comes in at 13.9 percent octane and offers up a deep and properly reserved bouquet of cassis, black raspberry, grilled meats, pepper, a touch of black olive, fine stony soil tones and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, focused and rock solid at the core, with a superb core of fruit, firm, ripe tannins and outstanding balance and grip on the long, nascently complex and very, very promising finish. There is a strong vein of iron in the soils here and this really comes across on the backend here. This is outstanding syrah in the making, with plenty of structure and outstanding depth of fruit. Think of old school Hermitage with a different, stony soil signature." 93 John Gilman, View From The Cellar

Capiaux Old Vine Russian River Pinot Noir 2018, 0.75L
Pinot Noir from Russian River Valley, California
"Sean Capiaux's 2018 Pinot Noir Old Vine is a blend from Widdoes and Starscape, both planted with Martini clone, which tends to give an especially aromatic, exotic Pinot. Blood orange, mint, spice, star anise and kirsch all lift from the glass. Like all of these Pinots, the Old Vine is a bit clenched today, and yet its potential is evident. Chanin Syrah Schock Family Vineyard 2018, 0.75L
Syrah from Santa Barbara County, California
"This is a cooler-climate Syrah done with the light touch of a Pinot Noir master. The nose is extremely peppery, reminiscent of a tour through a Tellicherry peppercorn factory, yet with tart cranberry, rust and soil elements as well. The palate is immensely grippy with more white pepper as well as charcoal and brisk red-fruit flavors. It will also cellar very well." 95 Points Matt Kettmann, Wine Enthusiast
"The 2018 Syrah Schock Family Vineyard is Gavin Chanin's first Syrah, and it is fabulous. Deep and rich, but not at all heavy, the 2018 has so much to offer. Readers will have to be patient, as the 2018 is an embryonic wine at this stage. What comes across is the wine's exceptional balance and harmony. Chappellet Cabernet Sauvignon Signature 2019, 0.75L
Cabernet Sauvignon / Malbec / Petite Verdot / Merlot from Napa Valley, California
"This is very complex, with blackcurrants, tobacco and cedar. Some sandalwood and terra-cotta, too. Medium-to full-bodied with ultra-fine tannins that are creamy-textured and so long and pure. Attractive and complex. 77% cabernet sauvignon with petit verdot, malbec and merlot. So good now to drink, but will age beautifully. Drink or hold." 95, James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com
"The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Signature is a terrific wine and a big overachiever in its price range. Black cherry, plum, mocha, lavender, spice, licorice and new leather lend tons of complexity to this bold, luscious Cabernet. This overt, upfront Cabernet offers plenty of near and medium-term appeal." 93, Antonio Galloni, Vinous.com
"Always a smoking value that readers shouldn't miss, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Signature sports a dense purple color to go with beautiful cassis and blueberry-like fruits as well as bouquet garni, spice, and obvious, rocky mineral-like aromas and flavors. Rich and medium to full-bodied, with notable structure and good acidity, it's going to keep for two decades in cold cellars. It's a candidate for the best Napa Cabernet under $100." 94 Jeb Dunnuck

Chateau Montelena Chardonnay 2019, 0.75L
Chardonnay from Napa Valley, California
"I remember standing at the press as the first squeeze from our first lot of Chardonnay in 2019 began to trickle into the pan…and thinking WOW. Even at 6am and at that stage – cold juice scarcely 2 hours removed from the vine – it was clear that the potential for an effusive, rich, complex wine was there. The excitement lasted scarcely 10 seconds before it was time to get to work; time to envision, time to make (irreversible) decisions, and time to act. Seeing the potential, the mosaic in our minds, is one thing. Being naturally curious and receptive to new, creative ideas is another. But it’s in the translation, the execution, and the eventual realization of what’s finally in the glass that’s the greatest challenge yet ultimately the most gratifying." Winemaker Notes

Enfield Wine Co. Chardonnay Citrine 2018, 0.75L
Chardonnay from California, California
"The 2018 Chardonnay “Citrine” bottling from Enfield Wine Company is composed from fruit from four different vineyards: Rorick Heritage, Heron Lake, Haynes and Brosseau Vineyard, with the average age of the vines fully forty years of age. While I do not have any specific information on its winemaking, it seems to have seen at least some of the blend fermented or raised in cement eggs. The bouquet is bright and classy, offering up scents of apple, lemon blossoms, a touch of lavender, a fine base of soil tones, citrus peel and a bit of beeswax in the upper register. On the palate the wine is bright, full-bodied and nicely soil-driven in personality, with a good core, fine focus and grip, zesty acids and a long, nascently complex and quite classy finish. This is a nicely cool fruit chardonnay at 12.9 percent octane, with plenty of personality and the structure to age very well indeed. Good juice in a nicely offbeat style that recalls early vintages of Chalone, with less new oak. 2020-2035." 91 Points John Gilman, View From the Cellar

"More iron, ground pepper, charred meats, and tapenade notes emerge from the 2018 Syrah Block B, a rich, powerful, yet focused and elegant Syrah that does everything right. Offering plenty of chalky minerality, ripe, building tannins, and a great finish, this brilliant Syrah will keep for at least a decade. The wine is 100% Syrah that was mostly destemmed (28% whole clusters) and spent 19 months in 82% new French oak."96 Jeb Dunnuck, JebDunnuck.com, Sept 2021

Far Niente Chardonnay 2021, 0.75L
Chardonnay from Napa Valley, California
"Far Niente Chardonnay is a blend of superlative Napa Valley vineyards located in Coombsville, a cool growing region nestled in the rolling countryside and protected by the hills east of the city of Napa. Coombsville offers the characteristic climate of Carneros, with less wind, along with deeper, well-drained gravelly loam and volcanic ash soils. The combination of these spectacular vineyards results in the subtle, tropical flavors, complex aromas, and uncommon richness that have long been associated with Far Niente Chardonnay." Winery Notes

Gemstone Cabernet Sauvignon Heritage Selection 2018, 0.75L
Cabernet Sauvignon from Yountville, California
"The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Heritage Selection, from the back part of the property, is plump, juicy and full of character. Inky dark fruit, mocha, floral notes and spice . All the elements come together so nicely. Picking a bit earlier than in the past helps preserve freshness as well as energy. Time in the glass brings out the wine's volume and resonance. The juicy, creamy style works well here. Inky dark red/purplish fruit, spice, rose petal and new leather build into the resonant finish. I find a bit better balance here than in the Alluvial Selection. (Drink between 2022-2038)" 95, Antonio Galloni, Vinous.com

Hall Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2019, 0.75L
Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley, California
"Primarily from the Hardester Ranch in Pope Valley, with other major contributions from St. Helena, Soda Canyon and Glass Mountain, it's a medium to full-bodied effort, with bold flavors of cherries, cassis and cedar. It's easy, but not soft, nicely firm, with a long, silky-textured finish. Craig and Kathryn Hall Sacrashe-d onto the Napa Valley wine scene with the 1994 purchase of the Sacrashe property, at the eastern edge of the Rutherford AVA. Craig was a successful businessman; Kathryn's family had owned a vineyard in Mendocino when she was growing up. From 1997–2001, Kathryn served as U.S. ambassador to Austria, which put a brief hold on the couple's plans to expand their wine business, but in 2001, they purchased the property on Highway 29 that has become their signature attraction. Mike Reynolds came on board in 2002 as winemaker and has since been promoted to president; my extensive tasting visit was conducted with the winery's current vice president of winemaking, Megan Gunderson, who joined Hall in 2005 as an enologist." 90 Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate

Hanzell Chardonnay 2017, 0.75L

"The 2017 Chardonnay is pliant and expressive, yet very much in the understated style that is such a Hanzell signature. Orange peel, tangerine, butter, hazelnut and light honeyed notes are all laced together in a sublime, nuanced Chardonnay that hits all the right notes. The counterpoint of textural depth and energy is compelling. (Drink between 2020-2027)" 92, Antonio Galloni, Vinous.com

Jaimee Motley Wines Peter Martin Ray Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Santa Cruz Mountains 2018, 0.75L
Cabernet Sauvignon from Santa Cruz Mountains, California
"Jaimee Motley's 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Peter Martin Ray is shaping up to be a jewel of a wine. Rich and layered in the glass, the 2018 has that extra kick of mid-palate density and volume that the 2017 doesn't, the result of a far more even and favorable growing season. Dark plum, mint, lavender, spice and dried herbs all develop with a bit of air, but it is the wine's balance that is most compelling. The 50% whole clusters are barely perceptible. Kistler Chardonnay Kistler Vineyard 2020, 0.75L

Lady of the Sunshine Chene Vineyard Pinot Noir 2021, 0.75L
Pinot Noir from Edna Valley, California
"This vintage is a 50/50 split of dijon clone 667 and 115 from the steepest hillside blocks that sit on monterey formation rock bed. This site is naturally devigored and makes for concentrated, small clusters that achieve stem lignification early on. The grapes were fermented with 100% whole-cluster with light extraction during fermentation. The wine was pressed in our wooden basket press at dryness and aged for 10 months in neutral french oak barrels before being racked for the first time to bottle, without filtration. Marcassin Pinot Noir Marcassin Vineyard 2013, 0.75L
Pinot Noir from Sonoma Coast, California
"The 2013 Pinot Noir Marcassin Vineyard doesn’t have quite the drama, depth of flavor or profound depth of the 2012. This dark plum/ruby-colored wine offers displays crisp acids as well as notes of Chinese black tea and orange rind, and builds incrementally in the mouth to a medium to full-bodied finish. By Marcassin standards, it’s just a brilliant wine rather than a compellingly great one. What an extraordinary tasting this was at the Marcassin winery just north of Santa Rosa in Sonoma County. Just when you think the duo of Helen Turley and John Wetlaufer can’t make greater wines, they bowl over the taster with an array of exquisite quality that really must be tasted to be believed. Marcassin was probably California’s greatest Chardonnay after the famous Chalone winery fell from the pinnacle and onto hard times in the 1980s (and it has yet to rebound). Moreover, Marcassin set the bar for great Pinot Noir as well. And while both their Chardonnay and Pinot Noir have many competitors these days (from the likes of Harford Court, Mark Aubert, Kistler, Kongsgaard, DuMol, Thomas Brown, Peter Michael, Martinelli and Luc Morlet, to name a few), John Wetlaufer and Helen Turley remain the reigning geniuses of these two varietals in California. Certainly, their meticulous attention to detail in both the vineyard and in the winemaking and élevage account for the quality, but they were among the pioneers who saw the unlimited potential from the Sonoma Coast, now a relatively crowded neighborhood. This was a remarkable tasting that simply blew me away, and I have been following their wines since the first Marcassins were made in the early 1990s. By the way, any doubts about aging potential should be crushed immediately, as even in the most challenging vintages in California, Marcassin Chardonnays and Pinots have aged as well as, if not better than just about any grand cru white Burgundy. For example, 1995 and 1996 Chardonnays, particularly those from the Lorenzo Vineyard, are incredibly youthful and dynamic, and the Marcassin Estate Pinot Noir, even from vintages such as 1998, is simply amazing. The three Chardonnays tasted include two perfect wines. Perhaps the closest comparison is not to anything made in California, but a Corton-Charlemagne in a top vintage from the famous Jean François Coche-Dury." 94 Points Robert Parker

Matthiasson Cabernet Sauvignon Village No. 3 2019, 0.75L
Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley, California
"Sometimes you just want an honest glass of Cabernet. Refreshing, flavorful, not too heavy, and not too light. A Cab for drinking at the table, not looking at in the cellar. And a Napa Cab that doesn’t break the bank. A “Village” Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. A bright lively wine with lots of flavor that is great with food. We blended a “table Cab” from delicious lots of our wine that didn’t quite make it into our Matthiasson Cabernet blend but that taste great together as a “Village” wine.
Village Cab No. 3 is a blend of wines from multiple vineyards throughout Napa Valley, from Rutherford down to Oak Knoll, all of which were organically farmed, fermented, and aged by us and us alone."

Readers will have to be patient with the 2018, as it is an imposing, vertical Cabernet that needs years to be at its best. Newfound Gravels California 2019 2019, 0.75L
Grenache / Carignane from California, California
Sourcing
In 2019 we transitioned Gravels from a Grenache dominant wine to a 50/50 marriage of Grenache and Carignane. The Grenache was sourced entirely from the Cemetery Vineyard and the Carignane entirely from the Colombini Ranch. Both sites contain similar geology and are planted in (the simplest of terms) gravel. The Grenache and all of its perfume and elegance combined with the density and nerve of the Carignane were the perfect match for our second iteration of ‘Gravels’. Thirty days separated the picks - as the Grenache arrived toward the end of August with the Carignane completing our harvest as the final pick coming in at the end of September.
Vinification
When vinifying the wine our extraction techniques favored elegance over abundance. The lots were fermented separately but employed similar methods – 100% whole cluster, wild yeasts, one simple cap-wetting per day - spending up to 35 days in total on the skins. The Grenache was aged in one 2000L Austrian oval barrel, while the Carignane was aged in one 2000L French Foudré. A total of 14 months were spent in each vessel before assembly at which point the wines were racked, blended and bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Tasting
Deep black cherry, herbal sage brush, lavender and melon rind aromatics. That palate combines density and a snappy freshness that makes this bottling a versatile companion for any meal or occasion. Drink now or over the next five years.

Outward Wines Cabernet Sauvignon Massa Vineyard 2021, 0.75L
Cabernet Sauvignon from Carmel Valley, California
The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Massa Vineyard comes from old vines planted in 1968 in the Carmel Valley near the coast. "For us, the best expressions are varietally distinct, and we wanted to pay homage to that older style in California," say Natalie Siddique and Ryan Pace, the newly married couple behind Outward, founded in 2016. Grapes were destemmed and spent 30 days on skins with delicate pour-overs done "by hand with a pitcher," they quip—their production is still tiny, with about 1,100 cases made in 2021. The Massa Cabernet has a medium ruby-purple color and bright aromas of red and black currants, blueberries, sage, aniseed and tobacco leaves. The medium-bodied palate is delicately intense with perfumed fruit and savory accents. It has an approachable, lightly chalky frame, energetic acidity calling you in for another sip and a long, floral finish. It's an elegant, easy-to-drink style to enjoy over the next 3-5 years. Medium-bodied and bursting with layers of concentrated, crunchy fruit, it has alluring spicy accents as it traverses the palate. It offers a fine, chalky frame, tremendous, energetic acidity and a very long, perfumed finish. This elegant expression that nods to the Côte-Rôtie style is a pleasure to drink! Only 72 cases were made." 94 Points, Erin Brooks, Wine Advocate

Philip Togni Cabernet Sauvignon Estate 2019, 0.75L
Cabernet Sauvginon from Spring Mountain District, California
"The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is a classy, sophisticated wine that shows the more restrained side of the year and this site. I imagine the 2019 will flesh out in time. Bright acids, red-toned fruit, dried herbs, mint and silky tannins convey finesse more than power. I especially admire the aromatics today. I can't wait to see how this ages." 96 Antonio Galloni, Vinous
“The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is a classic Togni wine, meant to be laid down for at least a decade and capable of aging well for 20 years beyond that in a cool cellar. Hints of green olive and thyme add savory nuance to the raspberry and cassis shadings on the nose, while the medium to full-bodied palate is concentrated into a dense, streamlined shape that throws off waves of dusty tannins, buffered by hints of cedar and vanilla, with lingering cassis notes on the finish. Earlier this year, I was able to arrange a visit with Philip and Birgitta Togni. Now in their mid-90s, their daughter Lisa is largely running the show, but we spent some socially distanced time outside talking about their early days on Spring Mountain. Not surprisingly, the Glass fire was the first topic of conversation, as there were scorched tree trunks all around, and a crew of workers were cutting and removing dead and fallen trees. ‘Our neighbors [Lokoya] saved us,’ said Philip. It is an untold story of the recent fires in California, that in the wake of overstretched government-funded firefighting departments, private companies with deep pockets have had to contribute to the defense of their own properties—but they have also come to the aid of their neighbors. ‘We've been lucky to be here for 45 years,’ said Birgitta. The two of them have been in Napa since 1959, when Philip started working for Mayacamas. He later moved on to work for Chapellet—helping establish their vineyard on Pritchard Hill and making their legendary 1969 Cabernet Sauvignon—and Cuvaison, where he was working as winemaker, when, as Philip tells it, ‘Birgitta said, 'Let's not work for somebody else.' ‘ By 1981, they had purchased 25 acres on Spring Mountain and planted 4.5 acres—three of them devoted to Sauvignon Blanc, ‘for cashflow,’ said Philip. They made their first Cabernet in 1983 but replanted in 1985—most of their current vines date to then, a mix of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. ‘I made the '56 Château Lascombes,’ said Philip. ‘So, I mirrored that cépage.’ Lisa Togni, who has an MBA and worked harvests in Australia (twice) and at Léoville Barton, said, ‘So much of what we do here is similar to how things used to be done in the Médoc. If we can grow good grapes, the winemaking is easy.’ The vineyards now encompass a total of 10.5 acres, with two parcels that produce softer, less tannic wines, devoted to the production of Tanbark Hill. Yields are thinned to three tons per acre, never supplemented by outside fruit. But despite the small size of the estate, 10-ton fermenters are the norm. ‘We prefer the larger volume, for higher-temperature fermentations,’ said Lisa. Malolactic fermentation takes place in barrel, with about 40% new French oak. The family does plan to bottle 2020 wines this summer. ‘We picked well before the Glass fire,’ said Lisa. ‘We'd just pressed the day before.’ Later, we went down into the cellar to taste, still being careful to stay far apart—Philip sat on a stool about 30 feet away. We didn't look at barrel samples on this occasion, but we did taste the current releases (2019) and a couple of library releases that are made available to long-term customers. These remain benchmark mountain Cabernets, with decades of aging potential.” 95+ Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate

Philip Togni Cabernet Sauvignon Tanbark Hill 2019, 0.75L
Cabernet Sauvignon from Spring Mountain District, California
"It's telling that even Togni's 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Tanbark Hill Vineyard—the early-drinking wine—needs a few years in the cellar. The barest hint of bell pepper accents bold cassis fruit and notes of wild thyme on the nose, while the medium to full-bodied palate is fairly open and generous, with enough suppleness to suggest only five years of cellaring will be necessary. Classically styled, it's streamlined in shape and long on the finish, ending with mouthwatering acids and soft tannins." 92+ Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate

"Racines is a collaboration between Tyler Winery’s Justin Willett, Domaine de Montille’s Étienne de Montille and Brian Sieve, and Rodolphe Péters of Champagne Pierre Péters, working with entirely Sta. RIta Hills fruit. For the most part, the entire lineup levels-up the intensity and structure of the Tyler wines, as is the case with their Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir. Sourced from multiple sites across the appellation with a backbone of La Encantada Vineyard. Meaty, dense, and reminiscent of a damp forest on the nose and palate, with a balanced, dark-fruited, saline-heavy finish." - 94 points, Decanter Magazine

Realm Cellars Proprietary Red The Tempest 2019, 0.75L
Cabernet Sauvignon / Merlot / Cabernet Franc / Petit Verdot from Napa Valley, California
"The 2019 The Tempest, Realm's Merlot based red, is not surprisingly, quite accessible. Super-ripe blackberry, cherry jam, sweet spice, licorice and new oak all flesh out as this succulent, hugely inviting wine shows off its considerable charm. The 2019 is a looker, that's for sure. The blend is Merlot from Realm Estate, Farella and Orchard, with Cabernet Sauvignon from Houyi." 96 Antonio Galloni, Vinous
"The 2019 The Tempest is a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, mainly coming from cooler sights this year, including Farella vineyard in Coombsville, Oakville, Stag’s Leap Estate and Oak Knoll, with the portion of Cabernet Sauvignon all coming from Houyi vineyard on Pritchard Hill.
Deep garnet-purple colored, the nose offers gorgeous notes of baked blueberries, black cherries and mulberries with hints of menthol, dark chocolate and licorice. Full-bodied, rich and velvety, the mouth is packed with loads of spicy layers, while bright sparks of red fruit offer compelling energy, culminating with a long, perfumed finish. This is a wonderfully poised, polished Merlot." 95+ Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate

Ridge Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Estate 2019, 0.375L
Cabernet Sauvignon / Merlot / Petit Verdot from Santa Cruz Mountains, California
"The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate comes from the estate Monte Bello Vineyard on the eastern side of the Santa Cruz Mountains and is 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot. Hitting 13.8% alcohol, its deep ruby/purple color is followed by a brilliant perfume of blue fruits, scorched earth, tobacco leaf, and lead pencil. Beautifully balanced and medium to full-bodied, with building tannins, it's a seamless Cabernet Sauvignon that has some up-front appeal given its balance and elegance yet will benefit from 2-5 years of bottle age and, I suspect, have 20+ years of overall longevity. While many of these wines fall outside the “Central Coast,” I was able to taste a full lineup from Ridge and am happy to include these wines here. Going forward, the Sonoma releases will be covered by my colleague, Audrey Frick." 94+ Jeb Dunnuck
"The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate offers a hugely appealing mix of fruit richness married to the savory, structured style that is the Ridge signature. The 2019 is beautifully exotic, but natural without the volume of the Monte Bello. I imagine it will drink splendidly with minimal cellaring. Succulent red cherry, blood orange, mint, cinnamon and pomegranate. Ridge manages to pull off the impossible, which is to excel in both larger-volume, commercial bottlings while also offering a number of small production, niche wines that will appeal to the nerdiest of wine lovers .... There are a ton of compelling wines in this range beyond the obvious Geyserville, Lytton Springs and Monte Bello. The 2019 Zinfandel Pagani Ranch, Syrah Grenache Mataro Lytton Estate and Carignane Buchignani Ranch are all wines I would love to own." 92 Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Scar of the Sea Zinfandel Lopez Vineyard 2022, 0.75L
Zinfandel from Cucamonga Valley, California
"Planted in 1918, 70 miles inland from Los Angeles and certified organic by CCOF, this vineyard is part of California history. Farmed today by the Galleano family, we are lucky to be able to make wine from this old vineyard. The vines are farmed without irrigation in granite rocks and sandy soil surrounded by freeways and track homes. This vineyard is one of the last reminders of an old California. This wine was picked in early August, fermented with native yeast and 50% whole cluster. The grapes were basket pressed at dryness and then aged for 8 months in old French oak barrels before being racked for the first time to bottle, without fining or filtration, and with minimal sulfur used. Think candied raspberry and blueberry, accents of tea leaves, dried flowers and dusty earth" Winery Notes

Tatomer Gruner Veltliner Paragon 2020, 0.75L
Grüner Veltliner from Santa Barbara County, California
"The 2020 Grüner Veltliner Paragon stands out because its distinctly savory, phenolic personality. Dried apricot, sage, menthol and earthy undertones all run through the 2020. At times the Paragon almost feels like a red wine, such is its presence and overall feel. I was blown away by the wines I tasted with Grahama Tatomer this year. Tatomer has thoughtfully expanded his range over the last few years. At the same time, he has become more selective about what goes into the vineyard designate whites, choosing to use the rest for his entry-level Hinter der Mauer, which is easily one of the very finest values in all of Santa Barbara. Tatomer has acquired a reputation as a Riesling specialist in California, indeed he is one of the variety’s foremost exponents, but he is every bit as skilled with Pinot Noir. The Mascot Proprietary Red 2018, 0.75L
Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley, California
"The Mascot began as a family wine, unnamed, unlabeled—a blend made for and poured at our own table. The components were of the highest pedigree, harvested from the younger vines of the Harlan family domain. The domain traces its beginning to the founding in 1984 of Harlan Estate, located in the western hills of Oakville and conceived as a “first growth of California.” In 1996, the family established BOND, a portfolio of “Grand Cru” vineyards whose wines showcase the range of expression of cabernet sauvignon across distinct geographical sites within the Napa Valley. Promontory, whose land the family acquired in 2008, is led by the family’s second generation and represents a 21st-century approach to winegrowing. As these varied sites were gradually replanted, many of the young vines contributed to my project. Yet, despite these distinguished origins, my early endeavor could only hint at the individual character embodied by each of our grands vins." Producer Notes

Tyler Rose of Pinot Noir 2022, 0.75L
Pinot Noir from Sta. Rita Hills, California
"From various high quality vineyard sites, our Rosé is composed from the free-run juice afforded to us by simply transporting the vintage’s first Pinot Noir to our cellar. During this short trip across the Sta. Rita at dawn, the Pinot Noir is gently pressed by its own weight, rendering our first taste of the vintage—and the basis for our exceptionally limited rosé. We carry this juice to a stainless steel tank and old barrique for fermentation using native yeasts, and then raise the wine in neutral oak for about four months. The wine is unfined and filtered. The resulting wine speaks of the Sta. Rita Hills with unique clarity and tension: it is at once floral and mineral, carried by a through-line of bracing acidity and sea spray." Winery Notes

Whitcraft Winery Chardonnay Pence Ranch 2018, 0.75L
Chardonnay from Sta. Rita Hills, California
"Clean and precise aromas of packed white flowers, tropical citrus and lime soda show a tinge of tart dairy on the nose of this single-vineyard expression. There's tremendous tension on the palate, where citrus-spray elements give an edge to the more generous nectarine and pineapple flavors. It also offers a finish that leaves the mouth invigorated." 94 Points Matt Kettmann, Wine Enthusiast

Pinot Noir from Sta. Rita Hills, California
"When Drake Whitcraft took over the family winery in 2007 (the winery was founded two decades before, in 1985 by his parents, Chris and Kathleen) his goal was to make balanced Central Coast wine of purity, honesty, and finesse. The resulting wines are clean and impeccably balanced. They represent a cross section of the emerging class of site-specific wines coming out of Central Coast California today."
