Cuevas de Arom Tuca Negra Campo de Borja 2016, 0.75L
Grenache from Campo de Borja, Aragon
“The new top-of-the-range 2016 Tuca Negra Garnacha has a round palate with fleshy tannins and feels nicely balanced, even if the alcohol is on the higher side. Those white soils seem to impart a special elegance and freshness in the wines. The oak is nicely integrated and seems to have the balance and components for positive developments in the bottle. It has a saline twist in the finish that makes it very tasty. Only 953 bottles were filled in July 2018.” 94 Points, Luis Guiterrez, Wine Advocate

Descendientes de Palacios Corullon Bierzo 2020, 0.75L
Mencia from Bierzo, Bierzo
"I was blown away by the 2020 wines in barrel in June 2021 and found the 2020 Villa de Corullón very ready, open, expressive, floral and ethereal. It destroyed the idea I had of a warm and ripe 2020. Ricardo Pérez Palacios told me he was thinking of bottling the 2020s earlier, as they didn't need a long élevage, just nine or 10 months in barrel. The wine is pale, the palest Corullón ever, with 13.7% alcohol—perhaps the vines got blocked and didn't develop more color compounds or sugar. The wine makes me think of a red from Jura; it has a different profile and is more delicate, ethereal and full of light and energy. Pérez, who hates comparisons with other regions, couldn't stop saying that it felt like a Morey Saint Denis! It's all flowers and red fruit, with a lot of super fine tannins (the 2019 tannins are rougher) that are round and give it a velvety texture with no rusticity—elegant and balanced. There is a nice balance between tannin and acidity, something this has in common with the 2019, which makes the vintages quite unusual, because being warm, the wines show balance. Today, it feels more like Moncerbal than the Moncerbal bottling; nevertheless, Corullón is around 40% from Moncerbal. ... It has to be my favorite Corullón to date. 22,183 bottles and some larger formats produced. It was bottled in October 2021." 97 Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate

Tameran Vijariego Gran Canaria Blanco 2020, 0.75L
Vijariego Blanco from Gran Canaria, Canarias
"Vijariego Blanco, also known as Diego, is thought to have been introduced in the Canaries from Andalucía and is not a mutation of Vijariego. There are multiple spellings, most notably Vijariego and Vijiriego, even Bujariego in La Palma, but this name is not allowed anymore. It’s a grape with high acidity and lowish alcohol, so it’s often used for sparkling wines. The 2020 Vijariego Blanco is only 11.2% alcohol with a low pH of 3.14 and notable acidity, 7.5 grams (measured in tartaric acid per liter), so it's a light and sharp wine true to the variety. It fermented with indigenous yeasts in 500-liter oak barrels, where it matured with lees for 10 months. It's floral and vibrant, the latest-ripening grape here, with more freshness. It's a wine that should develop nicely in bottle. This is a little shy compared with its siblings, but it's a wine that will gain with time in bottle. 1,320 bottles were filled in June 2021." 93 Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate

Dominio de Anza Parcelario I Diego Magana 2020, 0.75L
Mencía / Bastardo / Garnacha Tintorera from Bierzo, Castilla Y Leon
"There is no 2019, so we jumped to the 2020 Dominio de Anza Parcelario I from a vineyard in Otero on slate soils that fermented with 100% full clusters and matured in one 225-liter oak barrel. It's different from the wines from Valtuille and has more freshness. It has moderate ripeness and alcohol (12.7%); if Valtuille is more Rhône, this would be more Burgundy. I like this a little bit better than the El Rapolao. Unfortunately, there are only 300 bottles of this—it's what the vineyard delivers. In 2021, he used two plots and produced a little more wine, but he doesn't yet know if it's going to be blended or kept separate, perhaps with a more defined name." 96+ Points, Luis Guiterrez, Wine Advocate

Dominio de Anza/Diego Magaña Bierzo Tinto Selección de Parcelas 2020, 0.75L
Mencía / Bastardo / Garnacha Tintorera from Bierzo, Castilla Y Leon
I found earthier notes and a darker aromas in the 2020 Dominio de Anza Selección de Parcelas, a common thing in the 2020s, perhaps a little reductive. In 2020, part of the wine comes from a new plot on slate soils in the village of San Lorenzo, and perhaps it has some notes reminiscent of a Barolo. The profile of the wine has changed: it's not as aromatic as the 2019, and it has a different texture with more noticeable tannins. This 15% of the wine from a different zone and soil has changed it. It might require more time. 8,900 bottles produced. 94 Luis Gutierrez, Wine Advocate, Jan 2022

Bodegas Antidoto Ribera del Duero 2020, 0.75L
Tempranillo from Ribera del Duero, Castilla y León
"I also tasted an unbottled barrel sample of the 2020 Antídoto, a blend of 96% Tinto Fino and 4% Albillo that had a short maceration and has been in 600-liter oak barrels (only 5% of them new) since January 2021. It looks like a superb vintage for this wine that still shows the wild and faintly herbal side that makes me think of a Northern Rhône—juicy and very fine with chalky tannins and a dry and varietal finish. This is a little like 2018, approachable and understandable from early on. Volumes will grow in 2020." 92-93 Points, Luis Guiterrez, Wine Advocate

Bodegas Y Vinedos Alion 2018, 0.75L
from Ribera del Duero, Castilla y León
"Fresh and very floral with violets and berries. Blackberries and orange peel, too. Medium-to full-bodied with firm, linear tannins. Excellent length and structure. Seriously structured, Better after 2024, but already beautiful." 96, James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com
"The 2018 Alión follows the path of the 2016: it is fresh and elegant and from a cooler (more Atlantic) vintage with more rain than the average and a relatively late harvest between September 28th and October 12th. They used 80% new barrels, with up to 10% made of American oak looking to (in their own words) give more sucrosity and sweetness to the wine, as it's a more vertical, tense and elegant expression of Alión. Part of the wine matured in concrete (something they started in 2016), and in 2021 they are experimenting with a 4,000-liter Rousseau foudre, as they want to keep working the texture and freshness. The wine is ripe at 15% alcohol and has a pH of 3.8 and a mellow 4.6 grams of acidity, round and soft. The wine matured until it was bottled in June 2020. The truth is that the wine comes through as subtle, elegant and balanced, with very integrated oak and a nice texture. It's one of the finest vintages for Alión..." 95+, Luis Gutierrez, Wine Advocate

Dominio de Pingus Flor de Pingus 2020, 0.75L
Tempranillo from Ribera del Duero, Castilla y León
"Flor is what Peter Sisseck calls "my village wine", sourced from La Horra with a smidgeon from Olmedillo. Featuring 3% Grenache for the first time, as well as 0.5% of white grapes, it's a gentle, precise, beautifully balanced red, with granular tannins, plum, liquorice and wild strawberry flavours and a subtle, palate-caressing finish." 95, Tim Atkin, TimAtkin.com
"There is around 20% new oak in the 2020 Flor de Pingus, and because it has a little younger vines (there was a land-consolidation project in La Horra in 2006!), there'll be some Garnacha starting in 2021 and maybe some oak vats for aging too. All this shows the direction, where he found structure and volume in the palate, with textured tannins. It's harmonious and elegant, aromatic and floral, perfumed and showy, with contained ripeness and around 14% alcohol. The palate is quite powerful, with abundant but fine tannins." 94+, Luis Guiterrez, Wine Advocate

Dominio de Pingus Ribera del Duero PSI 2020, 0.75L
Tempranillo from Ribera del Duero, Castilla y León
"The unbottled sample of the 2020 PSI feels young, juicy, very fruit-driven and clean. 2020 was an unusual vintage, first of all because of COVID-19, but it was a year with lots of light, plenty of flowers and a beautiful spring. They were able to harvest quite early and finished two days before the abundant rains (except in Soria, which is a different story) that started on the 20th of September. In Ribera, there will be two different harvests: the wines before the rain and those from after. So, this is very healthy, aromatic and floral, with a spark of freshness but also ripe and round. It's going to be a crowd-pleaser. It has a bright ruby color, with some 10% Garnacha. It somehow has less Tempranillo character. Volumes are similar to 2019, with around 350,000 bottles that they expect to bottle around June 2022." 92-94 Points, Luis Guiterrez, Wine Advocate

Fuentes del Silencio Las Jaras 2017, 0.75L
Mencía / Prieto Picudo / Alicante Bouschet from Castilla y León, Castilla y León
"Fuentes del Silencio's Las Jaras is a bombshell for the price. Located in northwestern Spain, at the eastern foothills of the Galician mountains, this blend made from 80 to 150-year-old Prieto Picudo, Mencía and Alicante Bouschet vines makes for a wine of unusual depth, concentration and surprising freshness. At an altitude of more than 2,600 feet, the growing season is long and results in a wine of wonderful tension, texture and freshness. Once the cork is pulled, the wine immediately begins its vertical climb and builds from one strength to the next, day after day. It seems that this wine can easily last for a week after being opened and still deliver freshness and bright fruit. Those who have tasted this wine are always dumbfounded by its level of depth for the price." Importer Notes, The Source

La Vizcaina (Raúl Pérez) Bierzo Las Gundiñas 2020, 0.75L
Mencía from Bierzo, Castilla y León
"The 2020 La Vizcaína Las Gundiñas has a new plot, a west-facing vineyard that is steeper and cooler. Pérez likes Gundiñas and Rapolao in warmer years like this. In 2020, 50% of the wine matured in 2,000-liter oak foudre and the other half in used 500-liter barrels. It was harvested much earlier, and the wine shows more freshness even if it shows more tannin today. He likes long macerations (40 to 45 days) and works toward having tannins and weight in his wines. Raúl Pérez 'Ultreia La Claudina' Godello Bierzo 2020, 0.75L
Godello from Bierzo, Castilla y León
"They have lowered the alcohol and ripeness in most of the whites, but some vineyards are more difficult than others... The 2020 Ultreia La Claudina comes from a plot on sandy soils that needs higher ripeness to avoid excess bitterness. In 2020 it matured in 50% new barrels as they wanted to see how the wine behaved. It has power and consistence, but the style is a little different from what the wine was before, a little creamier and marked by the élevage. It's more exuberant and quite the opposite from the rectitude of La del Vivo. There are some 2,200 bottles from 1,700 liters of wine." 94 Points, Luis Guiterrez, Wine Advocate

He used more stems and full clusters in 2020, and since 2018, they have removed the percentage of white grapes that used to be included in the wine. Vega Sicilia Reserva Especial Unico (2020 Release) NV, 0.75L
Tempranillo from Ribera del Duero, Castilla y León
"To be released in 2020, the NV Único Reserva Especial 2020 Release is a non-vintage blend of 59 barrels from 2008, 2009 and 2010, mostly Tempranillo with some Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine has been getting closer to the style of the Único, and the blend is from vintages very close to the current release of Único, but somehow this year I think the blend has added some complexity to the bottled wine, which has the heart and soul of the 2010 vintage. In fact, they told me they are keeping more wine to have some older vintages to blend for this Reserva Especial, because in the last few years, the wine has been a little too young for the style that it used to have in the past. This has finesse and some of the Burgundian style of the blends of yesteryear. 17,071 bottles and 214 magnums produced. It was bottled in June 2016. Drink: 2020-2030. Vega Sicilia Unico Gran Reserva 2013, 0.75L
Tempranillo from Ribera del Duero, Castilla y León
"This has a polished and complex nose of poached plums, dark cherries, tea leaves, graphite, milk chocolate and a touch of caramel. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm yet creamy tannins. Caressing, seductive and ripe, but with underlying freshness. 97% tempranillo and 3% cabernet sauvignon. Tasted from magnum. The normal bottle will be released 2023 and the magnum in 2025. Try after 2023." 98, James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com
"The wine is subtle, elegant and fresh, complex, silky and with precision. The wine matured in 225-liter barrels in an initial phase and then in 22,000-liter oak vats until it was bottled in June 2019. This year, the final blend was 97% Tinto Fino and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon with a little less alcohol, 14%, and a pH of 3.78 and 5.2 grams of acidity, fresh and balanced, more elegant and subtler. Único often transcends the character of the vintage and doesn't follow the norm in the region, and the 2013 is a good example of that. It was a very rainy and complicated vintage; they harvested quite quickly to avoid botrytis, and while other people waited for concentration, they did not, and their approach clearly paid back. It's aromatic and floral, less dense than the 2012, subtler, more expressive and more elegant. It's clean and fresh, tasty, with very fine tannins. It's a big surprise for the vintage and one of the finest Únicos in the last few years." 97, Luis Guiterrez, Wine Advocate

Vega-Sicilia Valbuena 5° 2018, 0.75L
Tempranillo from Ribera del Duero, Castilla y León
"The 2018 Valbuena comes from a cooler vintage with good yields that required sorting and selecting in search of a happy and vertical version of Valbuena, pushing a little more and giving the wine a little more oak, especially American (5%). It was produced with 96% Tinto Fino and 4% Merlot that went through a three- to four-day cold soak and fermented with indigenous yeasts followed by malolactic in stainless steel. The élevage was in new and used 225-liter oak barrels and 21,000-liter oak vats. It has 14.5% alcohol and a pH of 3.8 and 4.78 grams of acidity (tartaric), so it's ripe and with mellow acidity that gives it a mellow mouthfeel. This is a very spicy vintage for Valbuena, getting closer to the style of Único (while at the same time I felt the 2018 Pintia from Toro was getting closer to the aromatics of some vintages of Valbuena, like 2010). It was a late-ripening year with a tendency toward freshness in the wines. The palate is medium to full-bodied, with very fine tannins that made the wine nicely textured and very elegant. There is a lot of regularity in the Valbuena of the last few years, here with more tension and freshness of the 2017, a little more balsamic even. 180,580 bottles, 5,528 magnums and some larger formats produced. It was bottled in May 2021." 96, Luis Guiterrez, Wine Advocate

Vinas Serranas El Canchorral 2019, 0.75L
Rufete from Castilla y León, Castilla y León
"The 2019 El Canchorral is a blend of Calabrés (Garnacha), Aragonés (Tempranillo), Verdejo Negro, Rufete Blanco, Palomino, Moscatel and other grapes planted 85 years ago on degraded pink granite soils. This is the only wine that ferments with 100% full clusters. It has a lot of white grapes and is more floral, with less alcohol (it's 13.5% even in this riper year), more acidity and a lower pH. It is more floral à la Fleury and very expressive, as they can use very low doses of sulfur in this wine given its higher natural acidity (possibly because of the white grapes). This comes from a very old vineyard, and the varieties feel very integrated and complement each other. It comes through as complex and nuanced, a little riper and showier than the 2018. The palate reflects the effect of the stems in the vinification a little. All of these single-vineyard wines matured in used oak barrels for some 15 months in 2019. Around 1,500 bottles were filled in May 2021." 94 Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate

Vinedos del Jorco Las Enebradas Navalgordo 2017, 0.75L
Grenache from Paraje del Jorco, Castilla y León
"I was really looking forward to the 2017 Las Enebradas, because the first vintage, 2016, was the revelation of my last review of the zone of Gredos. I was quite surprised because the profile is very different: the wine has a lot more color and up to 2% more alcohol. Nacho Jiménez, one of the partners, explained that the profile of the 2016 vintage was exceptional and hard to replicate, as yields were higher and it rained just before they picked the grapes, so the wine is a lot lighter. 2017 was very different, a lot warmer and with lower yields, and the grapes delivered a concentrated juice with a lot more color, tannin and alcohol. It has a more Mediterranean profile, more in line with the rest of the wines. This fermented with 50% full clusters and temperature control and matured in one 500-liter oak barrel. Despite the higher ripeness and the headier character, the wines from Navatalgordo have a different texture and fine thread, the finesse of a cooler place and sandy soils at higher altitude (even if the vines are south-facing here), and you see it when tasting this next to the wines from Cebreros. It's more elegant and fresher. 570 bottles were filled in August 2019." 93 Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate

Celler Credo Miranius 2019, 0.75L
Xarel-lo from Penedés, Catalunya
"“Miranius”—which translates loosely into Catalan as “peers into nests” (a tribute to the foxes which sometimes roam their biodiverse vineyards looking for a snack)—is 100% Xarel-lo, in part from some of the estate’s younger vines, and in part from fruit purchased from a handful of biodynamically farming friends in the immediate area. Fermentation proceeds spontaneously in stainless steel, and the wine rests on its fine lees in steel for six months before being bottled with a non-sterile filtration and a minuscule dose of sulfur. “Miranius” displays the brisk, agile side of Xarel-lo, a variety whose relatively neutral fruit character allows for a powerful articulation of calcareous minerality. Xarel-lo’s naturally high acidity brings balance in this warm Mediterranean climate, and indeed this wine is bright, saline, and immensely refreshing, as well as a tremendous value." Clos Mogador "Gratallops" Vi de Finca Priorat 2020, 0.75L
Grenache / Carignan / Syrah / Cabernet Sauvignon from Priorat, Catalunya
"The 2020 Clos Mogador comes from a very challenging vintage in Priorat, a year with lots of rain and some fungus problems that are very unusual in the zone, which is usually very healthy. They bought a further four hectares so they could keep the volume despite the difficulties with mildew. The wine is more tannic and a little astringent despite now having any time in barrels anymore; starting this year, it matured exclusively in 2,000-liter oak foudre, and the impact of the wood is milder. A very good result, it's powerful but has good balance. The vintage is more tannic, and the quality of the tannins is not the same as those from 2019, as they couldn't wait for better tannins because of the risk of losing acidity and freshness. 26,000 bottles produced." 97, Luis Guiterrez, Wine Advocate

Recaredo Turo d'En Mota de Recaredo Brut Nature 2008, 0.75L
Xarel·lo / Macabeo from Alt Penedès, Catalunya
"Their top wine is the single-vineyard Xarel·lo 2008 Turó d'en Mota, named after the origin of the grapes. 2008 was an exceptional year in the zone, and the wine fermented in 300-liter oak barrels and then was put to referment in bottle, where it spent no less than 155 months (12 years and 11 months!) with the lees. 2008 produced healthy clusters of extraordinary acidity, ideal for the long aging, and it has only 11% alcohol, an incredible pH of 3.02 and six grams of tartaric acid. Maybe I'm influenced but the nose, but the aromatic palette from this wine is completely different from the rest of the portfolio, with green olives, curry, spices, toast and smoke and wet chalk, all in a very subtle way. This has density, fine tannins and citrus freshness that makes you salivate. This is a superb white wine that happens to have bubbles... A completely different wine, full of personality and character. This feels very young and undeveloped, as it's aging at a glacial pace. Winemaker Ton Mata told me other 2008s have evolved in a very positive way. The wine has been certified organic and biodynamic since the 2010 vintage. 4,317 numbered bottles produced." 97 Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate

Dominio do Bibei Ribeira Sacra Tinto 2016, 0.75L
Mencia / Brancellao from Ribeira Sacra, Galicia
"Bright ruby. Seductive red and dark berry liqueur, allspice and floral aromas, along with hints of incense and smoky minerals. Juicy, seamless and energetic on the palate, offering densely packed black raspberry, cherry cola, mulberry and floral pastille flavors that show excellent clarity and back-end lift. Polished, well-knit tannins lend shape to a strikingly long, seamless finish that shows superb blue-fruit- and spice-driven persistence." 95 Points, Josh Raynolds, Vinous

Guimaro Finca Meixeman Ribeira Sacra 2019, 0.75L
Mencia / Brancellao / Merenzao / Garnacha / Mouratón / Negreda / Sousón from Ribeira Sacra, Galicia
"The single-vineyard 2019 Finca Meixeman comes from one of their oldest vineyards, planted with a field blend of 80% Mencía and 20% Brancellao, Merenzao, Garnacha, Mouratón, Negreda and Sousón. It has an austere nose that benefitted from being in the glass for over one hour, so decanting in advance might be a good idea if you are going to pull the cork any time soon. It has subtle notes of violets and wild berries and herbs. It has 13% alcohol but, despite that, feels a little riper than the other 2019s, perhaps more approachable and gourmand. There are some 8,000 bottles. It was bottled in February 2021." 96 Points, Luis Guiterrez, Wine Advocate

Guimaro Ribeira Sacra A Ponte 2019, 0.75L
Mencia from Ribeira Sacra, Galicia
"The single-vineyard 2019 A Ponte was produced with grapes from vines planted in 2010, a vineyard that used to belong to the Guímaro family a long time ago that they had to buy again and replant. It's a blend of 30% Mencía and similar parts of Caíño, Merenzao, Brancellao and Sousón. All the grapes fermented together with 100% full clusters in closed troncoconic vats with a 50-day total maceration time and always matured in 500-liter barrels. It has less color and is rather light and ethereal compared to its siblings. All the 2019s are more closed than the 2020s, and the wines are more austere and, in general, have more depth and balance, with lower alcohol. This has 13% and a subtle nose of wild flowers and herbs, nuanced and complex. This is superb for such young vines. 4,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2020." 95+ Points, Luis Guiterrez, Wine Advocate

Luis A. Rodriguez Vazquez Vina de Martin Escolma Blanco 2015, 0.75L
Treixadura / Albariño / Lado / Torrontés from Ribeiro, Galicia
"The current vintage of the top of the range in white is the 2015 Viña de Martín Escolma Blanco. Luis Anxo talks about a very good vintage, and he's always quite prudent and humble, which means the vintage was no less than excellent, with perfect weather that allowed picking each plot of white at the right time and the red ripened properly. Here, he wants to express "our way of understanding wine: ancestral varieties and lands, manual and respectful viticulture, forcing low yields, minimal intervention and a relatively long time in the cellar. We want a complex wine, but direct and intimate." This is a blend of Treixadura Albariño, Lado and Torrontés from his oldest vineyards on poor soils that deliver one kilo per plant. Each plot ferments separately with indigenous yeasts in new or semi-new 300-, 500- or 600-liter oak barrels, where the wine is kept with lees for one year, then blended and bottled. It's kept three years in bottle and sold the November four years after the harvest. This is a quiet and serious wine, like its creator, subtle, elegant and nuanced. It has notes of herbs and spices, pollen and beeswax. This is a super balanced vintage, with ripeness, concentration, freshness and elegance in a rare combination. This feels very young and seems to be evolving at a very slow pace and should make old bones. I've had wines from Luis Anxo close to 30 years old, and they are still going strong, so my drinking window is very conservative. 4,800 bottles and 200 magnums were filled in December 2016." 95 Points, Luis Guiterrez, Wine Advocate

Telmo Rodriguez 'Gaba do Xil' O Barreiro 2021 2021, 0.75L
Godello from Valdeorras, Galicia
"The entry-level white from Valdeorras is now called the 2021 Gaba do Xil O Barreiro, which they harvested intermittently because of the rain from early September. The wine has only 12.5% alcohol and retained a low pH of 3.4. This was bottled unoaked after four months with lees in stainless steel. They have reduced the volume here, making a selection from their own vineyards in Larouco on red soils with a little more clay, so it's almost a different wine. This feels a bit reductive, a lot more than the other two whites; it's younger, a bit too young, but the palate is fresh and precise, with salty granite minerality and a dry finish with a bitter twist. 77,334 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2022." 92, Luis Guiterrez, Wine Advocate

Valdesil Pezas da Portela Godello 2018, 0.75L
Godello from Valdeorras, Galicia
"Pale, green-tinged yellow. Fresh pear, white peach and orange zest on the nose, with honeysuckle and mineral notes adding lift. Bright and sharply focused in the mouth, offering incisive citrus and orchard fruit flavors complemented by suggestions of fennel and quinine. Smoothly melds power and vivacity and finishes very long and nervy, showing outstanding clarity and minerally persistence. (Drink between 2021-2027)" 93 Josh Raynolds, Vinous
"The barrel-fermented Godello 2018 Pezas Da Portela has a more golden color and a creamy nose, spicy and somehow flinty, not oaky. It fermented and matured with lees and bâtonnage in French barriques for six months. The palate reveals complex flavors; it's nuanced with a mixture of mineral and gunpowder-like notes with notions of tangerine peel, quince paste and dried flowers, with yellow rather than white fruit. This comes from a myriad of small plots in the village of Portela, where the family Prada Gayoso originated. Serious, seamless and expressive Godello. 8,000 bottles produced. It rested in tank for one year before it was bottled in February 2020. I had not tasted the wines from Valdesil for a while, as they seemed to have vanished into thin air." 92+ Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate

Alegre Valgañón Rioja Blanco 2020, 0.75L
Viura / Grenache Blanc from Rioja, La Rioja
"The 2020 Rioja Blanco from Alegre Valgañón is composed from its customary blend of ninety percent Viura and ten percent Garnacha Blanco. The wine is bright and youthfully reticent today, but with some coaxing offers up a lovely bouquet of tart pear, lemon, white soil tones, spring flowers and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, crisp and impeccably balanced, with a fine core and soil undertow, lovely focus and bounce and a long, nascently complex and very promising finish. This is approachable today, but still very much a puppy and I would tuck it away in the cellar for five or six years and really let it blossom properly! Alegre Valgañón Rioja Tinto 2020, 0.75L
Tempranillo / Grenache from Rioja, La Rioja
"The house red 2020 Tinto showed superbly. It's a blend of Tempranillo from the Obarenes Mountains (Sajazarra and Fonzaleche) with 20% Garnacha from Cárdenas on clay and some 5% white that has 14.2% alcohol but feels perfectly balanced and integrated. It has a serious, harmonious nose with complexity and depth but also youth. It has a soft and juicy texture with focused and clean flavors, finishing with an almost salty twist. Super tasty and easy to drink! Great value too. It matured in a mixture of 1,000- and 3,000-liter oak foudres and 225- and 500-liter barrels. 22,000 bottles produced. Bodegas Hermanos Pecina Rioja Senorio de Pecina Cosecha 2020, 0.75L
Tempranillo from Rioja Alta, La Rioja
"The 2020 regular bottling of Rioja from Señorío de P. Peciña is a lovely wine, offering up plenty of nicely ripe fruit and a fine underpinning of soil tones. The bouquet wafts from the glass in a mix of black cherries, cigar wrapper, Rioja spice tones, a nice touch of soil and just a whisper of American oak. On the palate the wine is bright, full-bodied, focused and generous at the core, with good mineral drive and grip, moderate tannins and a long, juicy and very well-balanced finish. This is really good for an entry level bottling! (Drink between 2022-2040)" 89 Points, John Gilman, View from the Cellar

Bodegas Hermanos Pecina Rioja Senorio de Pecina Crianza 2015, 0.75L
Tempranillo from Rioja Alta, La Rioja
"They are convinced at the winery that the 2015 Señorío de P. Peciña Crianza is the best Crianza they have ever produced, which is often the case with the current vintage for sale... But I must admit that the wine was very impressively balanced, nuanced and complex. It has freshness and is approachable enough while showing Rioja character and integrated oak to appeal to a wide audience. It's ripe without excess, coming through as juicy and tasty. It spent two years in used American oak barrels." 92 Points, Luis Guiterrez, Wine Advocate

Bodegas Hermanos Pecina Rioja Senorio de Pecina Crianza 2016, 0.75L
Tempranillo from Rioja Alta, La Rioja
"I love the classical nose of spice, berries and herbs of the 2016 Señorío de P. Peciña Crianza, a textbook ultra-classical Rioja that matured in used American oak barrels for 24 months, during which time it was racked by gravity every six months. These wines are fermented with indigenous yeasts and a soft vinification without much extraction of long macerations. It's expressive, polished and very pleasant, really what I expect in this style, with some developed notes and a gentle mouthfeel. 100,000 bottles produced. Very good introduction to a classical Crianza at a very attractive price. It was bottled in April 2021." 93, Luis Guiterrez, Wine Advocate

Bodegas Hermanos Pecina Rioja Senorio de Pecina Reserva 2014, 0.75L
Tempranillo from Rioja Alta, La Rioja
"The 2014 Rioja “Reserva” from Señorío de P. Peciña is another beautiful current release from this great bodegas. The wine is showing far more secondary complexity on the nose than the lovely 2015 Crianza bottling, wafting from the glass in an utterly refined blend of cherries, raspberries, cigar smoke, salty soil tones, cloves, allspice, incipient nutskin and a lovely foundation of coconutty American oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and already nicely velvety, with a sappy core of fruit, lovely mineral undertow, suave, mellowing tannins and a long, complex and seamlessly balanced finish. Great juice. (Drink between 2022-2065)" 93+, John Gilman, View from the Cellar

Granja Remelluri Gran Reserva 2014, 0.75L
Tempranillo from Rioja, La Rioja
“An elegant bouquet, with beautiful, crisp fruit. Notes of blackberry, plum, and black cherry, as well as echoes of orange zest, Christmas spices, and smoky nuance. Powerful yet elegant on the palate, with sappy acidity and a lot of dark fruit tones. Fine-grained tannins and a long finish.” 96 Falstaff Magazine
"A considerable step up on the 2013 release, this is a pale, refined, elegant Gran Reserva made from Tempranillo with 30% Garnacha and Graciano grown on poor limestone soils up to 780 metres. Floral, savoury and sweet, with fine tannins, some wild mountain herbs and bright acidity. Not a blockbuster, this is all about finesse and balance." 95 Tim Atkin MW, timatkin.com
"I tasted the 2014 Granja Remelluri Gran Reserva from a year that wasn't easy. Like 2013, which vintage I was able to compare this with in my earlier tasting, 2014 was also a late harvest with rain, and they also had to sort and select the grapes and ended up bottling a small quantity, 9,860 bottles instead of the usual 20,000 or so. It's a little riper than the 2013, but it feels very complete. This is a red for the long run, and I am truly impressed by its texture and the quality of the tannins. I see a jump in quality here, hopefully the direction the wines are going to develop in the future. It was bottled in May 2017 after close to 30 months in barrel." 94, Luis Guiterrez, Wine Advocate

La Rioja Alta Viña Ardanza Reserva 2015, 0.75L
from Rioja Alta, La Rioja
"A rich nose of raspberry, crushed strawberry, blueberry, coconut, cedar and sweet spice. It’s medium-to full-bodied with fine tannins and fresh acidity. Creamy, balanced and layered with vibrant, spicy character. Long and polished." 96, James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com
"I tasted two vintages of their sleek and polished blend of Tempranillo and Garnacha, the oldest of which is the 2015 Viña Ardanza Reserva. It's a blend of 78% Tempranillo and 22% Garnacha (because they found that they needed a little more volume in the wine) from a powerful, warm and ripe year, very interesting to compare with the 2016. They consider 2015 a very good vintage; they compare it with 2001, a year when they produced all the wines. There are three wines from 2015, and there is something in common in all thee wines. The grapes were picked in mid-October and put through optical sorting to ferment followed by malolactic until the end of the year. The wine matured in used American oak barrels—the Tempranillo for 36 months with six manual rackings and the Garnacha for 30 months with five rackings. I find it to be more tertiary, with hints of leather and cured meat and a little wild, very spicy. It has a powerful palate with plenty of tannin, and it even feels that it needs some more polishing of perhaps powerful food..." 94, Luis Guiterrez, Wine Advocate

Bodegas Olivares Altos de la Hoya Monastrell 2020, 0.75L
Mourvedre from Jumilla, Murcia
"I was less taken by the oak in the 2020 Altos de la Hoya, produced in a more commercial and mainstream way from ungrafted old Monastrell vines. But there's good fruit and depth here, a medium to full-bodied palate and fine-grained tannins, and the wine has the stuffing and balance to overcome the creamy oak with some more time in bottle. It matured in a mixture of oak vats and barrels for some six to eight months." 90+ Points, Luis Guiterrez, Wine Advocate

The hand-harvested grapes were gently pressed in a pneumatic press without destemming into stainless steel tanks. The wine rested on its lees for 7 months, also in stainless steel, with weekly batonnage for the first 3 months. Bodegas y Viñedos Artadi Quintanilla 2019, 0.75L
Tempranillo from Alava, Spain
"Fresh yet deep nose, exuding aromas of dark blackberries, blueberries and a hint of iodine, violet, cream and mineral. Pretty elegant on the palate with a medium to full body, unleashing plenty of chalky tannins that give a solid bite to the finish. Dense yet still fluid, with a lengthy finish. Beautiful balance. Tempranillo. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold." 96 James Suckling, Jamessuckling.com, Sept 2022
"The bottled 2019 Quintanilla combines the power of the year and the place with 14.68% alcohol and soft acidity. There are more tannins, and it has the chalky sensation of the limestone. It also has notions of ripe berries and the character of this year's wines, keeping the freshness. This is austere and mineral within the ripeness. It comes from a 1.13-hectare plot on limestone and sandstone soils planted in 1951 in the village of Elvillar, a walled, old-vine plot located in what was the 15th-century village of San Lorenzo de Quintanilla. The vineyard tends to produce powerful wines, and its grapes were always used to make the Pagos Viejos. This has some rugged tannins that give it a little rusticity, a character of the plot that tends to get stressed in warmer years. 2,800 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2021." 93+ Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate, July 2022

Bodega Mustiguillo Pago El Terrerazo Finca Terrerazo 2019, 0.75L
Bobal from El Terrerazo, Valencia
"... Fermented in 3,500- and 5,000-liter oak vats with indigenous yeasts and a soft extraction, and it had an élevage in those containers of 18 months. There is a step up in precision here, quite noticeable when tasting it next to the 2018. It's subtle, elegant and insinuating. It was a very good vintage for this wine. In 2018, the vineyards suffered from hail, and the wine shows more clarity here, it's more transparent and pure, it has symmetry and very fine tannins. This has to be the finest Finca Terrerazo so far. 29,360 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2021. They never stop at Mustiguillo." 94+, Luis Guiterrez, Wine Advocate
