Cuish Mezcal Espadín Agave Angustifolia NV, 0.75L
Mezcal from Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca
"In case you haven’t heard, we are big-time espadín advocates at Skurnik Wines and Spirits. Since the recent surge in popularity of mezcales made from numerous rare or wild agave, the once noble espadín has fallen into disrepute, often seen as commonplace and basic. This false impression could hardly be more incorrect. Truth is, the sugar-rich espadín has been the lifeblood of mezcal producing families for decades, and is often the most revered variety for its adaptability and generous yield, giving it a central role in social, civic and spiritual events for Oaxacan mezcal communities. Produced by maestro mezcalero Jose Santiago López in Santiago Matatlán, the heart of mezcal in Oaxaca, and rested in glass for two years, this espadín is a beautiful example of the variety’s diversity: full of ebullient aromatics like citrus peel, fresh bark, and sweet red berries. 48% ABV" Importer Notes, Skurnik Wines & Spirits

Amormata Mezcal Ensamble Tradicional NV, 0.75L
Mezcal from Tamaulipas, Tamaulipas
"In the border state of Tamaulipas, agave distillates have a unique history all their own, exemplified by this beautiful ensamble (blend) from maestro Jose Castellanos. Three different agave are used in equal proportion: Agave asperrima and Agave americana, both referred to generically as “Maguey” (Spanish for “agave”), with the smaller Agave univittata, locally dubbed “Amole”. All three are harvested and cooked together in a conical earthen oven; their caramelized juices are then squeezed out using an antique sugarcane press, or “trapiche”, while the fibers are discarded. During U.S. Prohibition, moonshine-style stills were smuggled over the border from Texas and became the favored local method: a traditional pot still is amended with a wooden barrel or “thumper” acting as a condenser between the pot and the coil. The resulting mezcal is wildly unique, with a distinct and delightful funkiness found nowhere else in Mexico." Importer Notes, Skurnik Wines & Spirits
