The vines in Nuits Saint Georges were planted in 2013, while those in Villers are impressively between 50 to 80 years old. These two vineyards are characterized by their deep clay soils. The winemaking process involves spontaneous yeast fermentation and aging for a period of 6 months in stainless steel tanks.

"Olives have been grown at Montenidoli since Etruscan time. We currently grow the Moraiolo and Correggiolo varieties; the former provides body, the latter perfume. Our olive trees are organically grown and pruned yearly. The harvest, by hand, begins in November and continues until just before Christmas. Our EVO [extra virgin olive] oil is in fact extra extra virgin: at the time of pressing its acidity is less than 0.20%, which is far below the 1% maximum allowed acidity for EVO oils. Montenidoli’s EVO oil emerges from the presses opaque and brash, with powerful vegetal aromas. Throughout its youth, it remains strongly flavored, with pronounced artichoke accents that make it more of a food to be served over bread than a condiment. "The white 2022 Blanco, 70% Viura with the rest mostly Garnacha Blanca, has a significant percentage of ripe Malvasía Riojana (a grape that doesn't ripen well every year), and it might have given it an extra kick of acidity. They blend wine from barrel and tank, which they started doing in 2016, and reduce the effect of the oak, especially the toast. They have discarded Tempranillo Blanco. This is still fresh and balanced, ripe and powerful, with 14% alcohol, but it keeps a low pH. It’s clean and tasty, with a spicy twist but no obvious oak. "Our 2022 Syrah is a gorgeous example of the variety, coming from some of the best Syrah vineyards in California. The backbone for the wine is the Rancho Arroyo Grande vineyard in the San Luis Obispo Coast appellation, making up just over half the blend. This cool and windy site is located about 7 miles from the ocean, yielding beautiful spicy fruit. The rest of the blend is composed of Syrah from our Sonoma Coast sites: Baker Lane, Solas Vineyard and Clary Ranch. All of the vineyards were harvested at perfect maturity and fermented whole cluster with native yeasts, before blending and aging in neutral oak barrels, along with 30% aging in concrete tank and 10% in French oak foudre. "Planted in 1918, 70 miles inland from Los Angeles and certified organic by CCOF, this vineyard is part of California history. Farmed today by the Galleano family, we are lucky to be able to make wine from this old vineyard. The vines are farmed without irrigation in granite rocks and sandy soil surrounded by freeways and track homes. This vineyard is one of the last reminders of an old California.This wine was picked in early August, fermented with native yeast and 50% whole cluster. The grapes were basket pressed at dryness and then aged for 8 months in old French oak barrels before being racked for the first time to bottle, without fining or filtration, and with minimal sulfur used. "The 2022 Chardonnay (Santa Barbara County) is a fabulous introduction to this range. Orchard fruit, citrus, white flowers and mint give the 2022 lovely aromatic presence. The blend of Santa Maria, Sta. Rita Hills and Los Alamos fruit works so well in this bottling. Justin Willett continues to expand his formidable empire. Readers will note a number of new releases in this year’s collection. When I first met Willett, a dozen years ago, Tyler was a new winery working exclusively with purchased fruit. Today, Tyler owns two estate vineyards, the new Mae Estate and the historic Fiddlestix, both in the Sta. Rita Hills, and produces a far wider range of wines. That is a dramatic transformation in a very short period of time. In general, the Chardonnays see 10 months in barrel followed by 6-8 months in tank. The Pinots spend 18 months in barrel, 33-100% new depending on the wine, with minimal to no racking during that time. There are a ton of highlights here . . ." 91 Antonio Galloni, Vinous
"Our Santa Barbara County Chardonnay is comprised of fruit from various high quality vineyard sites throughout the county, with the majority grown at the the Kick-on Ranch. This bottling is intended to provide great value and represenation, while keeping focus on quality and typicity. The chardonnay is whole cluster pressed to tank, settled briefly before being moved to another tank for fermentation. After fermentation is active, the juice goes down to 228L barrels and 500L puncheons. We perform no battonage and the wine goes through full Malolactic Fermentation. The wine is left on lees for 11 months before going back to tank for an additional few months of aging. The result is a fresh and bright style of chardonnay carrying a citrus, mineral, and marine profile - very much "Santa Barbara"." Tyler

Zotovich Vineyards & Winery is a small, family-owned operation located in the middle of the northern Sta. Rita Hills AVA, between Buellton and Lompoc. The vineyard was purchased in 2004, with the first estate wines produced 2 years later. The vineyard was first planted in the late 1990's, almost entirely to Italian varieties and is now grafted over to Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah, Viognier, and Grenache.
