Bodega Chacra Chardonnay 2021, 0.75L
Chardonnay from Río Negro, Patagonia

"This has a complex yet refined nose of sliced apples, peach pits, smoked almonds, wet stones, chalk and white pepper. Hints of beeswax, juniper and cedar, too. It’s medium-bodied, elegant and light-footed, yet powerful, too. Creamy layers of stones and stone fruit slowly evolve to blanched almonds and nougat. Very long and precise. Try this from 2024. From biodynamically grown grapes." 98 Points, James Suckling

Bodega Chacra Chardonnay Mainqué 2021, 0.75L
Chardonnay from Río Negro, Patagonia

“The 2021 Mainqué Chardonnay is the second white here, produced by Jean-Marc Roulot from 40-year-old ungrafted vines in Mainqué in the Lunita property (where they regrafted the vines to Chardonnay), where they work with cover crops, no chemicals, and bees. It fermented with indigenous yeasts, 70% in French oak barrels and 10% each in clay, concrete egg and stainless steel, and it matured for nine months, 70% in barrel and 10% each in concrete and stainless steel. It has the precision and purity of Roulot, which to a certain extent is the result of thorough work with the press. ‘He sent us the press program,’ Piero told me. ‘And we now have two presses. We are learning.’ When I thought about what was in common between the reds and the whites, I came up with three words: precision, purity and elegance. It has notes of white flowers and a touch of fennel and other aromatic herbs. It was harvested early in the morning and in the season, and the wine is light and refreshing, ethereal, weightless and with purity and precision. It's a delight. It was bottled in December 2021.” 94 Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate

"Fresh apricots, white strawberries, cream, crushed stones and lemon meringue on the nose. Subtle spice, such as anise, white pepper and lemon grass. It’s medium-to full-bodied with a textured, phenolic palate. Very fresh and focused with persistency and tense layers of white fruit and minerals. Drink or hold. From biodynamically grown grapes." 94 James Suckling

Mineral, layered and transparent. Taut finish. Fruit from Cincuenta y Cinco vineyard. No sulfites added. Drink from 2023. From biodynamically grown grapes." 96 Points James Suckling

Hiedler Riesling Ried Heiligenstein Erste Lage 2021, 0.75L
Riesling from Kamptal, Kamptal

"Sourced from 60-year-old vines, Hiedler's 2021 Ried Heiligenstein 1ÖTW Riesling shows clear, open, bright and elegant fruit with herbal as well as earthy notes of broken rock. Juicy, intense and dense in the mouth, this is a powerful and firmly structured, still somewhat bitter Heiligenstein that needs some time to develop its full size. It's undoubtedly a great Riesling from the Kamptal. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in Grafenegg in September 2022." 94+ Points, Stephen Reinhardt, Wine Advocate

"The bright nose of flint, green apple and cassis pulls you into this refreshing young gruner veltliner, which has stacks of fresh-herb character and plenty of depth on the medium-bodied palate. Crisp finish with nice wet-stone minerality. Matured sur-lie until immediately before bottling. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink now. Jean Foillard Fleurie 2021, 0.75L
Gamay from Fleurie, Beaujolais

"A generous red "The 2021 Fleurie comes from 3-hectares that suffered a lot of grillure in recent years and resulted in Foillard having to uproot parcels in the lieu-dit of "Champagne". This needs more encouragement on the nose compared to the Morgons. It is quite ripe considering the vintage - red cherries and crushed strawberry, hints of kirsch. The palate is medium-bodied, taut and crisp with fine tannins, brisk acidity and a touch of bitter cherry on the Morgon-like finish. Fine." 91 Neal Martin, Vinous.com

Jean Foillard Morgon Cuvée Corcelette 2021, 0.75L
Gamay from Morgon, Beaujolais

“The 2021 Morgon Cuvée Corcelette comes from vines averaging 50-years in age, this vineyard suffering less reduction in volume than others due to the sandy soils. It is aged in used barrels for around 9 months. It has a quite compelling and complex bouquet, with raspberry and wild strawberry, rose petal and light chalky scents. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, finely chiseled and lending tension. The acidity keeps this taut, focused, and quite minerally …. Bon vin. One of the original ‘Gang of Four’ disciples, Foillard is rightly esteemed as one of the leading Beaujolais producers, which is not reflected in market prices. Few wines represent better value than this. I have visited the Domaine several times over the years. On this occasion, I met with Fanny Bellenger, who works with Jean’s son Alex Foillard, to taste recent releases and take a quick tour of the winery. Unfortunately, due to the growing season in 2021, volumes are down 30%. The two 2020s I tasted from Alex Foillard are promising, especially the Brouilly that, when juxtaposing the two appellations, has more harmony and complexity than the Côte de Brouilly. The standout from Jean Foillard is the Morgon Côte du Py, though readers should not overlook the Fleurie despite the vines suffering grillure in recent years.” 91 Neal Martin, Vinous.com, May 2023

Jean Foillard Morgon Côte du Py 2021, 0.75L
Gamay from Morgon, Beaujolais

“The 2021 Morgon Côte du Py, matured in used barrels, has a more complex bouquet than the Corcelette: a melange of red and black fruit, potpourri/lavender, and a faint hint of curry leaf that emerges with time. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins and a fine backbone considering the growing season. This is very fresh and saline with quite a strict finish. You could attempt this now though I would be intrigued to age this for another two or three years before broaching. One of the original ‘Gang of Four’ disciples, Foillard is rightly esteemed as one of the leading Beaujolais producers, which is not reflected in market prices. Few wines represent better value than this. I have visited the Domaine several times over the years. Jean Foillard Morgon Les Charmes Eponym 2021, 0.75L
Gamay from Morgon, Beaujolais

"Foillard's Morgon Eponym comes from the Charmes lieu-dit, one of the highest parcels in the appellation. In contrast to the grandiose, deeply structured Côte du Py and silky-smooth Corcelette, this cuvée features a bit more crunch with lots of bright acidity and a leaner, more mineral profile. It nonetheless shares the satin texture of all Foillard Morgons, and should age similarly well for those willing and able to wait." Importer Notes

Marcel Lapierre Morgon N 2021, 0.75L
Gamay from Morgon, Beaujolais

"All our vines are located on the Morgon terroir. It is undoubtedly one of the most famous Beaujolais crus! Typically, Morgon presents four dominant aromas: cherry, violet, raspberry and a very slight touch of liquorice… Combining lightness and richness, our Morgon has an aging potential of around ten years on average. It should be noted that the Morgon appellation dates from 1936, only 12 years after the creation of the first AOCs, in Arbois and Châteauneuf." Winery Notes

Bachelet-Monnot La Fussiere Rouge Maranges 2021, 0.75L
Pinor Noir from Maranges, Burgundy

"The 2021 Maranges La Fussières 1er Cru Rouge was very complex to pick, the 5.5-hectares with ten different types of ripening depending on vine age and terroirs. It has a very mineral-driven bouquet, beautifully defined with more black fruit than the Clos de la Boutière. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp red fruit, a little leafy in style and sapid with a slightly peppery finish that might fool you into thinking there were stems in the blend (when in fact, they were too green to include this year). (Drink between 2024-2038)" 91-93 Neal Martin, Vinous

"A more elegant and admirably pure nose freely offers up its aromas of red cherry, plum and violet along with a more subtle touch of earth. There is again excellent vibrancy to the beautifully delineated medium-bodied flavors that flash both a subtle minerality and a beguiling finesse on the balanced finale. This is a really lovely effort that makes one feel like drinking it now, though it too has the stuffing to repay a few years of aging. Worth considering." 90 Allen Meadows, Burghound

Bachelet-Monnot Puligny Montrachet 2021, 0.75L
Chardonnay from Puligny Montrachet , Burgundy

"Firm reduction blocks an analysis of the nose today. By contrast, there is a really lovely sense of underlying tension to the dense and relatively powerful middleweight flavors that are succulent yet nicely detailed while retaining the innate refinement of a Puligny. This is an excellent villages that is well worth your consideration." 89-92 Allen Meadows, Burghound

"The 2021 Puligny-Montrachet Village has a strict, petrichor/wet limestone-scented bouquet, focused but not powerful. The palate is well balanced with a sappy entry, fine depth for a Village Cru and beautifully-judged acidity. A dab of spice enlivens the finish. This is an excellent, citrus-driven Puligny. "The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru, the usual blend of Crapiots and Perrières, has a beautifully defined bouquet with dark cherries, bergamot and wild hedgerow, very focused and classy. The palate is medium-bodied with a powdery texture, just a very small reduction at play, though that does not disguise the structure and substance on the finish. Wonderful. Dugat Py Pommard La Levrière Tres Vieilles Vignes 2021, 0.75L
Pinot Noir from Pommard, Burgundy

"The family has always produced classic Vins de Garde: deep in color, with explosive fruit and chiseled tannins. However, since Loïc has taken over, there has been a clear evolution, not only in the vineyards but also in the winery. Loïc does not chaptalize, acidify, inoculate or add anything to juice, and sulfur is only added prior to bottling. And while the wines are still deep and powerful, they have more balance and finesse than ever. Also never elevated, the alcohol rarely surpasses 13.5%, and harvest now occurs on the earlier side to retain freshness and elegance." Importer Notes

Francine et Oliver Savary Chablis Vieilles Vignes 2021, 0.75L
Chardonnay from Chablis, Burgundy

"The Savarys have finally earned the recognition for their hard work, and are highly regarded in the appellation. The clay-limestone hillsides of the Kimmeridgian chain are excellent for growing dazzling, complex Chardonnay, also known here as “Beaunois.” However ideal the soil, Olivier brings his own brilliance to the table. The grapes from his vineyards throughout the Chablis appellation are blended into one fabulously complex village wine cuvée.  He also bottles an extraordinary premier cru from Fourchaume, as well as a separate cuvée of old-vine fruit in heavy, wax-sealed bottles after élévage in demi-muids.  These exquisite wines are quintessential Chablis, with unmistakable aromas of ancient crushed shells and a pronounced, racy mineral structure." Importer Notes

Jean-Paul et Benoit Droin Chablis Valmur 2021, 0.75L
Chardonnay from Chablis, Burgundy

"From recently replanted vines totaling 1.04 ha; aged in 50% wood but only a small percentage is new. Once again moderate wood is present on the spicy aromas of green fruit and oyster shell-inflected nose. The rich, powerful and broad-shouldered flavors possess a borderline creamy mid-palate texture while exhibiting outstanding length on the sappy and saline finish. Very promising." 92-94 Allen Meadows, Burghound.com

"The 2021 Chablis Valmur Grand Cru offers more intensity and precision than the Vaudésir, the wood giving weight but beautifully assimilated, shucked oyster shells emerging. The palate is well balanced with a slightly honeyed opening, notes of lemon curd and orange pith, building nicely in the mouth towards a suave and lightly spiced finish. Superb." 92-94 Neal Martin, Vinous

"From a site of just over 1ha, Valmur is a colder site giving, as Droin says, a more masculine. Cool, closed on the nose, this will need a lot of time to open up. Oak is a little more apparent here, with very precise acidity. Very linear at the minute, a grand cru with a nose of white flowers, and a palate of great purity. This will need three to four years to open and will be hitting its stride in seven to eight." 93 Andy Howard MW, Decanter Magazine

"Pale lemon colour. An excellent bouquet, though as usual it is hard to know exactly where to place Valmur, some ripe apples, pears and the start of plums, rich and dense, with some marine notes at the back reminding us it is Chablis." 91-94 Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Château de Plaisance Anjou La Grande Piece 2021, 0.75L
Chenin Blanc from Anjou, Loire

“Vanessa Cherruau is a steward of one of the Loire’s great terroirs – Chaume. After finishing wine school in Angers, she worked throughout the wine industry for 12 years before befriending the Rochais family on the Chaume hill, who owned Château de Plaisance (more a farmhouse than Château) and its 25 hectares of vines growing on the schist bedrock of the appellation. With plans to sell the historic estate to the local cooperative, Vanessa convinced the family to sell to her instead, allowing her to continue the fine legacy they left, while forging a new path for Loire greatness. Luckily for Vanessa, she inherited some of the most well-cared for vines on the hill, as Plaisance has been certified organic since 1995 and certified biodynamic since 2008. She of course has continued the biodynamic viticulture started by her predecessors, knowing that taking care of the natural environment of the vines is of utmost importance. Since her first vintage in 2019, she has helped raise the image of dry Chenin made on the Chaume hill to where it is now one of the most intriguing Chenin terroirs in the Loire. Only 10km south of Savennières, Chaume is a sweet-wine-only appellation (Quarts de Chaume Grand Cru and Coteaux de Layon 1er Cru Chaume), and so Vanessa and the other producers of dry Chenin on the hill cannot legally use ‘Chaume’ on their labels. This hasn’t deterred Vanessa from continuing to make world-class dry wines, joining other growers on the hill to create their own name for dry Chenin made from vines on Chaume – Ronceray. This name has been adopted by growers to help promote the dry wines of Chaume, with its origin coming from the name of a 17th century monastery that made dry wines on the Chaume hill. Vanessa is unquestionably of the leaders of this qualitative surge in the area, with whites and reds of gorgeous purity and soaring minerality …. LA GRANDE PIÈCE: Certified Biodynamic; 100% Chenin Blanc; a single 0.8 ha site on the Chaume hill, facing south; 50+ year old vine; sandstone and puddingstone over schist bedrock; indigenous yeast, partial malolactic; fermented and aged in older barrel for 12 months; from Butte de Chaume, vinified in barrels for 12 months.” Skurnik

Francois Chidaine Montlouis-sur-Loire Clos du Breuil 2021, 0.75L
Chenin Blanc from Montlouis sur Loire, Loire

"Produced from 35+ year old vines, this wine is normally vinified dry. From a single vineyard parcel on one of the highest points in the appellation. The soils here are comprised of silex (flint) and a small amount of clay over limestone bedrock. Always vinified dry, this is one of the purest expressions of Montlouis that one can find. Plenty of minerals, pear and some quince in the nose, the acidity is crisp and intense giving way to a full wine that opens up over the palate leaving more quince and river rock sensations." Importer Notes

Lucien Crochet Sancerre La Croix du Roy 2021, 0.75L
Sauvignon Blanc from Sancerre, Loire

"Sourced from several parcels of the estate that are planted in rocky, white soils (Oxfordian limestones referred to as “caillottes” and “griottes”) with steep, east-southeast exposures, this cuvée is the most full-bodied and structured of the three core Sancerres of the domaine. Vinified in stainless steel with a late racking to insure that the wine captures the essence of the terroir, allowing the Sauvignon Blanc’s raw material rather than any oak dressing to carry the day. The wine is bottled in September of the year following harvest. Notes of black currant and white stone-fruits emerge, with a chalky minerality on the palate and a pleasing bitterness of yuzu citrus." Importer Notes

Domaine Gramenon Cotes du Rhone La Sagesse 2021, 0.75L
Grenache from Cotes du Rhone, Rhône

"Only just bottled so still quite introverted. Medium-bodied, with good concentration of fruit, quite robust tannins and good acidity. This will be excellent in time. Half whole bunch, and you feel just a touch of aromatic stems, but no excessive greenness or textural harshness. From three parcels around the estate of old-vine Grenache that are between 50 and 70 years old. Partially destemmed, fermented in raw cement tanks then aged in old barriques for 12 months. (Drink between 2025-2032)" 94, Matt Walls, Decanter

Jean-Louis Chave Sélection Côtes-du-Rhône Mon Coeur 2021, 0.75L
Syrah / Grenache / Mourvèdre from Côtes du Rhône, Rhône

"A year-in, year-out smoking value as well as a great bottle of wine, the 2021 Côtes du Rhône Mon Coeur checks in as equal parts Grenache and Syrah brought up in neutral oak. Its vivid ruby hue is followed by a medium-bodied, elegant, lively red offering pretty red and black berry fruits, some spring flowers, peppery herbs, and gamey nuances, fine tannins, and nicely integrated acidity. Coming from a cooler year, it still brings plenty of richness and depth and is well worth seeking out." 91 Jeb Dunnuck, JebDunnuck.com, May 2023
