El Viejo Almacen Huaso de Sauzal Chilena Pais 2016, 0.75L
Pais from Cauquenes, Valle del Maule
“The star here is the País, which he calls 2016 Huaso de Sauzal Chilena, from grapes picked later than usual, as there was rain during March and April. All of the wines here ferment in traditional raulí wood casks. The vines are extremely old—they don't know how old—ungrafted and head-pruned in the Secano Interior traditional zone of Chile, where viticulture was without irrigation. It ferments with indigenous yeasts, without temperature control or any intervention, and the wine matures in well-seasoned, neutral oak barrels for 12 months before bottling. It's an aromatic and delicious País, with great perfume and character, mixing flowers and herbs, some spices and an earthy nuance with a volatile touch. The variety has some rustic tannins that need some food. This is possibly the best Chilena from Cancino so far. This is always among my favorite País from Chile. 11,000 bottles produced. Like the rest of the 2016s, it was bottled in February 2017. I met with Renán Cancino, the man behind El Viejo Almacén de Sauzal, in Madrid to taste the 2016s, as he was on a trip to Europe. He works nine hectares of old vines in Sauzal and Truquilemu in Maule that are planted with Cariñena, Garnacha and País. He produces some 22,000 bottles per vintage. 2016 was a rainy year, with moderate yields, good concentration, lower alcohol and very good acidity—wines with nice balance. Great wines with the peasant character of the place. The País, which he calls Chilena, is among the best in the country.” 93+ Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate

Domaine Lafarge-Vial Fleurie Clos Vernay 2016, 0.75L
Gamay from Fleurie, Beaujolais
"The 2016 Fleurie Clos Vernay wafts from the glass with a nuanced bouquet of raspberries, wild plums, dark chocolate and loamy soil. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, tangy and quite concentrated, framed by elegantly fine-grained tannins that nevertheless suggest this is a wine that will go the distance, much like the family's Volnays." 93 Points, William Kelley, Wine Advocate
"A markedly more complex if not more elegant combination offers up notes of both red and dark raspberry that are cut with hints of earth and pepper. There is more volume and intensity to the concentrated and serious medium-bodied flavors that terminate in a mildly austere finish that is notably longer. This is excellent and well-worth considering." 92 Points, Allen Meadows, Burghound

Les Forts de Latour 2016, 0.75L
Cabernet Sauvignon / Merlot from Pauillac, Bordeaux
"The 2016 Les Forts de Latour is the clear highlight among these new releases from Latour. The first thing that is evident about the 2016 is the pedigree of the vintage. Undisputedly great. Readers will find a potent, dark Forts de Latour endowed with massive concentration and tons of depth. The 2016 won't be ready to drink anytime soon, but it holds tons of promise. Hints of gravel, sage, licorice and pencil shavings linger. The 2016 was impressive a few years ago. It is even better today." 96 Antonio Galloni, Vinous
"The fresh currant and violet aromas are so complex and beautiful on the nose. Full body, ultra-refined tannins and lovely tannin tension. Shows focus and such finesse. Beautiful finish." 96 James Suckling

Les Pagodes de Cos 2016, 0.75L
Cabernet Sauvignon / Merlot from St. Estephe, Bordeaux
"Just over half of the crop at Cos went into the second wine in 2016, with most of it from the same plots as usual. Subtly oaked and graceful, it’s a St. Estèphe-meets-Margaux style that’s a world away from what the château produced in 2009. Scented, poised and refined." 94 Tim Atkin MW

Pedesclaux 2016, 0.75L
Cabernet Sauvignon / Merlot / Cabernet Franc / Petit Verdot from Pauillac, Bordeaux
"So aromatic with crushed currants, raspberries and blackberries with hints of graphite and lead pencil. Full-bodied and very tight with beautiful tannins and a long, flavorful finish. The tannins really build at the end of the palate. Try from 2024." 95 Points, James Suckling, JameSuckling.com
"The 2016 Pédesclaux is the first vintage to include all four grape varieties planted in the vineyard, according to Emmanuel Cruse. It has a very focused, concentrated bouquet of blackberry, graphite, hints of tobacco and a slight granitic scent - très Pauillac. The palate is medium-bodied with silky tannin, impressive depth, gentle grip and a killer line of acidity. I adore the harmony and precision of this Pédesclaux, which is probably the best to date. Highly recommended. 13.3% alcohol. (Drink between 2024-2045)" 94 Points, Neal Martin, Vinous

Edmond Cornu Corton Bressandes 2016, 0.75L
Pinot Noir from Aloxe Corton, Burgundy
"Subtle wood influence easily allows the ripe and very earthy cassis, spice and black raspberry aromas to be appreciated. The rich, full-bodied and enveloping middle weight plus flavors possess a suave yet tautly muscular mouth feel though the typical Corton-like tannins arrive just at the very end of the exceptionally persistent if ever-so-slightly warm finish. This robust effort is built-to-age and is going to need at least 5-ish years first." 91-94 Allen Meadows, Burghound.com

Georges Lignier Clos de la Roche 2016, 0.75L
Pinot Noir from Morey St. Denis, Burgundy
"The estate owns five plots on a range of different soil, with the vines averaging about 60 years of age: Moderately saturated medium red. Aromas of cherry, strawberry and raspberry accented by brown spices; the nose suggests a bigger wine than the Clos Saint-Denis. The large-scaled and deeper in the mouth but tightly wound, with its red fruit flavors complicated by soil-driven notes of menthol, stone, dried flowers, spices and underbrush. A bit more powerful and tannic than the Clos Saint-Denis, this wine will also require a minimum of five or six years of aging upon release .... Benoît Stehly told me he 'loves' the style of 2016, and he prefers his ‘16s to his ‘15s for their balance and elegance. 'It’s unusual to have very fruity and very fresh wines at the same time,' he went on, 'and the tannins are wonderfully ripe.'" 91-94 Stephen Tanzer, Vinous

Luigi Oddero Barolo Rocche Rivera 2016, 0.75L
Nebbiolo from Barolo, Piedmont
"Rocche Rivera is a 2.5-hectare parcel inside the Scarrone cru located in Castiglione Falletto with sandy calcareous soils. The celebrated Rocche di Castiglione is located adjacent, and the Pira cru is directly above. Rocche Rivera enjoys an ideal position in one of the best-performing areas of the appellation in this classic vintage. The Figli Luigi Oddero 2016 Barolo Rocche Rivera is stunning, with a level of harmony and purity that makes an immediate and lasting impact. The wine shows pristine fruit aromas backed by wild rose, tar, ash and blood orange. Those aromas hang in perfect balance. The wine is firmly compact and solid in terms of mouthfeel, requiring a few extra years of cellar time to fully unwind. This beautiful 6,000-bottle release ..." 97+ Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

Nervi-Conterno Gattinara Vigna Molsino 2016, 0.75L
Nebbiolo from Gattinara, Piedmont
"Tasted next to the Valferana, the 2016 Gattinara Vigna Molsino is much more nervous in feel. Iron, dried herbs, sweet dried cherry, mint, crushed rocks, white pepper and earthy notes give the Molsino a good deal of aromatic complexity to match its intense, saline-infused minerality. Today, though, the tannins and acids are almost overpowering. Readers will find an old-school, classically austere Gattinara that needs 10-15 years to be at its best. The 2016 is an absolute jewel of a wine, but it should be purchased only by readers with either very good genes are a ton of optimism regarding their own longevity." 96+ Points Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Fattorie Romeo del Castello Vigo Etna Rosso 2016, 0.75L
Nerello Mascalese from Etna, Sicily
"The top wine from Fattorie Romeo del Castello is its 2016 Etna Rosso Vigo, and this bottle is held back for two more years of aging before its commercial release. There is a lot of fluid complexity and depth here, and new sides of the wine come into view with each swirl of the glass. The organic wine is fresh and tonic with interchanging aromas of wild rose, blue flower, cassis and dried herb. The mineral nuance and the wine's dryness are downplayed in the 2016 vintage. Instead, it offers substantial fruit weight and extra volume that builds the fruity, or more buoyant, aromatic profile of this terrific red. If this offering of 3,400 bottles were a stock, any good analyst would put it down as a strong buy." 96 Points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

Scopetone Brunello di Montalcino 2016, 0.75L
Sangiovese from Brunello di Montalcino, Tuscany
"The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino dazzles with a display of sour cherries, sage and clove with hints of cedar, licorice and flowery undergrowth. The balance here is spot-on, as silky textures give way to ripe red berries offset by tactile minerals, sour citrus and brisk acids which add lift and cooling freshness. Its tannins mount steadily toward the close in a classically dry and structured expression under an air of inner florals. What a beautifully pure expression of Sangiovese." 93 Points Eric Guido, Vinous
"Mid ruby. Lots of concentration and complexity. Racy acidity embedded in a layer of ripe fruit. Gorgeous interplay of energetic, concentrated fruit and bags of grainy tannins. Lots of depth while maintaining a medium-bodied weight throughout." 18/20 Points Walter Speller, JancisRobinson.com

Niepoort Quinta de Baixo Poeirinho 2016, 0.75L
Baga from Cantanhede, Bairrada
"The 2016 Poeirinho is a Baga aged for 20 months in old 2,000-liter fuders. It comes in at 12% alcohol. This seems better balanced and more refined than the 2015—but perhaps not as energetic. For the moment, I prefer the 2015, granting that they are not side by side. Lighter styled, crisp and transparent, this is a wine that is all about Baga characteristics. It adds that silky texture, refinement, acidity and tannins. It took a while for the pure power to come out, but there is plenty. The tannins are harder than you think at first—although not impossibly astringent. This is certainly beautiful, but it needs some time to evolve and develop, even if you can approach it fairly young. Let's be a little conservative and start here. This will have a long life ahead and plenty of time to evolve." 94 Points, Mark Squires, Wine Advocate

Cuevas de Arom Tuca Negra Campo de Borja 2016, 0.75L
Grenache from Campo de Borja, Aragon
“The new top-of-the-range 2016 Tuca Negra Garnacha has a round palate with fleshy tannins and feels nicely balanced, even if the alcohol is on the higher side. Those white soils seem to impart a special elegance and freshness in the wines. The oak is nicely integrated and seems to have the balance and components for positive developments in the bottle. It has a saline twist in the finish that makes it very tasty. Only 953 bottles were filled in July 2018.” 94 Points, Luis Guiterrez, Wine Advocate

Big Basin Vineyards Syrah Rattlesnake Rock 2016, 0.75L
Syrah from Santa Cruz Mountains, California
"The 2016 Syrah Rattlesnake Rock is a powerful wine. Red fruit, iron, chalk, white pepper, game and incisive tannins give the 2016 a real feeling of drive that distinguishes it in the range. This is an especially mineral-driven, savory, taut Syrah, with all the elements in the right place. Dried herbs, licorice and crushed flowers add aromatic intrigue. It will be interesting to see if the 2016 gains a bit more volume in bottle. It is such a promising wine. The Côte-Rôtie selection Syrah from John Alban works so well here." 94 Antonio Galloni, Vinous
"From the home estate in the Santa Cruz Moutains, the 2016 Syrah Rattlesnake Rock is a firm, mineral-laced, yet concentrated and textured Syrah that's going to benefit from bottle age. Red and black fruits, spiced meat, bacon fat, and dried flower notes are just some of its nuances. A concentrated, classic mountain Syrah, it needs 2-3 years of bottle age and will cruise . . ." 94+ Jeb Dunnuck
"The 2016 Rattlesnake Rock bottling of syrah from Big Basin is one of their estate vineyard bottlings, as these vines were planted in 2000 in this windy parcel that sits between thirteen hundred and fourteen hundred feet above sea level. The 2016 version includes one-third whole clusters, was fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged for twenty-one months in used, three hundred liter barrels. The cépages here includes two percent of viognier that was co-fermented with the syrah. The wine comes in at 13.9 percent octane and offers up a deep and properly reserved bouquet of cassis, black raspberry, grilled meats, pepper, a touch of black olive, fine stony soil tones and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, focused and rock solid at the core, with a superb core of fruit, firm, ripe tannins and outstanding balance and grip on the long, nascently complex and very, very promising finish. There is a strong vein of iron in the soils here and this really comes across on the backend here. This is outstanding syrah in the making, with plenty of structure and outstanding depth of fruit. Think of old school Hermitage with a different, stony soil signature." 93 John Gilman, View From The Cellar
