“The 2016 La Dame de Montrose is a blend of 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 52% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 11% Petit Verdot. It is often a difficult Deuxième Vin to taste en primeur, and it often meliorates considerably during its élevage. Here, the aromatics took some time to coalesce in the glass: blackberry, graphite and a noticeable oyster shell aroma. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip in the mouth, grainy in texture with very fine balance towards the finish where the quality of the vintage showed through. Doubtless those aromatics will improve and gain harmony by the time it is in bottle, and indeed, when I returned for a second visit I discerned a little more finesse and prettiness on the finish. "Darker in its ruby color, the 2019 Laurasie is a pure Cabernet Sauvignon from almost 20-year-old vines on the stony Jurassic plateau of Fosse-Sèche, where yields are not bigger than 20 hectoliters per hectare. This is fleshy and concentrated yet pure, fresh and elegant on the deep, terroir-driven and beautifully floral (violets) as well as graphitic nose that is absolutely distinctive in its delicate, pure and balanced style. Black and blue berries, dark cherries, green paprika, pencil lead and herbal, wet gravelly notes lead to a medium to full-bodied, highly elegant, refined and perfectly balanced palate that exhibits perfectly ripe, round and juicy fruit with a firm but ripe, very fine and elegant tannin/acidity complex. The finish of this concentrated red is tight, intense and spicy, showing black berry and chocolate as well as graphite and coal with dark cherry notes. If you can be patient ( 5 minutes with a penny in your glass, or your currency’s equivalent), It’s worth the wait. It reveals itself to be a richly fruited, savory style that fills the mouth with a balloon of chalky silkiness. The limestone element really shows itself on the long finish grained texture and sinew. This wine overperforms, considering the challenges of this vintage that saw extreme weather, from spring frost to scorching summer temperatures. These vineyard sites performed better than most. "The 2017 Barolo Coste di Rose has bright aromatics of candied raspberry, apricot, anise, and dusty earth. "The 2017 Barolo Coste di Rose is pretty, supple and inviting. Some of the tannins need to resolve, but this is a young Barolo after all. Crushed flowers, sweet red berry fruit, mint, crushed rocks and sage are some of the many notes that linger. In 2020, part of the wine comes from a new plot on slate soils in the village of San Lorenzo, and perhaps it has some notes reminiscent of a Barolo. The profile of the wine has changed: it's not as aromatic as the 2019, and it has a different texture with more noticeable tannins. This 15% of the wine from a different zone and soil has changed it. "The 2019 El Canchorral is a blend of Calabrés (Garnacha), Aragonés (Tempranillo), Verdejo Negro, Rufete Blanco, Palomino, Moscatel and other grapes planted 85 years ago on degraded pink granite soils. This is the only wine that ferments with 100% full clusters. It has a lot of white grapes and is more floral, with less alcohol (it's 13.5% even in this riper year), more acidity and a lower pH. It is more floral à la Fleury and very expressive, as they can use very low doses of sulfur in this wine given its higher natural acidity (possibly because of the white grapes). This comes from a very old vineyard, and the varieties feel very integrated and complement each other. It comes through as complex and nuanced, a little riper and showier than the 2018. The palate reflects the effect of the stems in the vinification a little. All of these single-vineyard wines matured in used oak barrels for some 15 months in 2019. “As I have mentioned in the past, Dominio Do Bibei is located in the most isolated and rustically beautiful corner of Ribeira Sacra, Quiroga-Bibei, where the terraced mountain vineyards are planted on granite to the customary regional blends dominant in Mencía, co-planted with smaller percentages of Brancellao, Garnacha Tintorera, Bastardo and Caiño. The Lalama bottling is made from de-stemmed grapes, fermented with indigenous yeasts and raised in older Burgundy casks prior to bottling. The 2020 Lalama comes in at fourteen percent octane and delivers a pure and very refined bouquet of pomegranate, cassis, cigar wrapper, graphite, granitic soil tones, a touch of fresh herb tones, cigar smoke and just a touch of cedary oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and beautifully balanced, with superb depth at the core, excellent transparency and grip, fine-grained tannins and a very long, focused and complex finish. This is a great bottle in the making, but give it some hibernation time in the cellar to let those suave tannins start to fall away and the wine to drink with generosity.”

"The red 2018 Imperial Reserva keeps the brand profile of finesse, precision and power, produced with grapes that were picked between October 8th and 26th in a year like in the past—cold, rain and snow followed by a warm summer. It's a blend of Tempranillo and 15% Graciano, Mazuelo and Garnacha that were put through optical sorting and fermented in oak vats with a 20-day maceration. It matured in barrel for 24 months. It's 14% alcohol and has a pH of 3.57. It's a textbook Reserva from Haro, fine-tuning the grapes they use here trying to control the power of this cuvée, which has to be powerful but keeping the freshness. This is quite young and lively, quite impressive, really very good, getting close to the complexity of a Gran Reserva but with the extra oomph of its youth. 150,000 bottles produced. "The 2019 Reserva, sold as Crianza in Spain, comes from a dry and warm year with low yields and concentrated wines. The grapes from the Haro zone, the four from Rioja, Tempranillo, Garnacha Tinta, Mazuelo and Graciano fermented destemmed and lightly crushed in oak vats with indigenous yeasts, and 80% of the volume matured in French oak and the rest in Centro European and American oak, 20% of them new, for 22 months, during which time the wine was racked every eight to nine months. This is serious and young but balanced, nuanced and complex. They are shortening the time in oak, as they feel they have better and younger barrels and think the wines need less time in oak and more time in bottle. This is very Muga, very Rioja and very good. They produced an impressive 960,000 bottles and 18,000 magnums of this. There is only one master blend that is bottled at different times. "The 2016 Rattlesnake Rock bottling of syrah from Big Basin is one of their estate vineyard bottlings, as these vines were planted in 2000 in this windy parcel that sits between thirteen hundred and fourteen hundred feet above sea level. The 2016 version includes one-third whole clusters, was fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged for twenty-one months in used, three hundred liter barrels. The cépages here includes two percent of viognier that was co-fermented with the syrah. The wine comes in at 13.9 percent octane and offers up a deep and properly reserved bouquet of cassis, black raspberry, grilled meats, pepper, a touch of black olive, fine stony soil tones and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, focused and rock solid at the core, with a superb core of fruit, firm, ripe tannins and outstanding balance and grip on the long, nascently complex and very, very promising finish. There is a strong vein of iron in the soils here and this really comes across on the backend here. This is outstanding syrah in the making, with plenty of structure and outstanding depth of fruit.
