Altos Las Hormigas Malbec Gualtallary 2019, 0.75L
Malbec from Gualtallary, Mendoza
"The 2019 Malbec Appellation Gualtallary comes from specific soils, two small three-hectare plots in the Cerros del Jaboncillo, where they find more caliche and limestone in Tupungato Winelands. They believe this place transmits the maximum expression of limestone to Malbec, giving a structured wine with fine-grained tannins with the wilderness from Gualtallary. It fermented in small concrete vats with indigenous yeasts at some 26 degrees Celsius for 20 days. Eighty-five percent of the volume matured in untoasted 3,500-liter French oak foudres for 20 months while the rest was kept in concrete. They sell it a little later than the Altamira because they feel Gualtallary needs a little more time in bottle; therefore, they are now offering the 2019 vintage, a very balanced wine that talks about the place where it was born. This is vibrant and expressive, with a complex nose and especially a lively palate with effervescent acidity and very fine-boned with elegant but firm tannins (they say "Serralunga-like" tannins). I find the recurring iron-like note of blood and fresh meat here too, intermixed with the wild flowers, herbs and spices. This has depth and complexity, and if Altamira is Barbaresco, Gualtallary is Barolo... 10,000 bottles were filled in January 2022." 97 Points, Luis Guiterrez, Wine Advocate

Altos las Hormigas Appellation Paraje Altamira Malbec 2019 2019, 0.75L
Malbec from Altamira, Mendoza
"The 2019 Malbec Appellation Paraje Altamira is made with grapes from the eponymous Uco Valley GI and aged for 18 months in untoasted foudres. A rich violet in hue. The subtle, clean and austere nose offers notes of plum and cherry along with violet and herb aromas against a cedar backdrop. In the mouth, the core is provided by a juicy freshness while the texture is chalky. A little reactive grip makes for a compact, nimble and linear flow that guarantees it will grow in the bottle. Fresh grapes appear at the back of the throat enhanced by the tannins. Keep for a while before drinking to allow its subtle character to develop properly." 94 Points,

Hiedler Riesling Ried Heiligenstein Erste Lage 2021, 0.75L
Riesling from Kamptal, Kamptal
"Sourced from 60-year-old vines, Hiedler's 2021 Ried Heiligenstein 1ÖTW Riesling shows clear, open, bright and elegant fruit with herbal as well as earthy notes of broken rock. Juicy, intense and dense in the mouth, this is a powerful and firmly structured, still somewhat bitter Heiligenstein that needs some time to develop its full size. It's undoubtedly a great Riesling from the Kamptal. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in Grafenegg in September 2022." 94+ Points, Stephen Reinhardt, Wine Advocate

Schloss Gobelsburg Tradition Heritage Cuvee 50 Years NV, .750L
Gruner Veltliner / Riesling / Grüner Sylvaner / Muskat Sylvaner / Riesling Sylvaner / Welschriesling / Muskat Ottonen / Trainer / Muskateller from Kamptal, Kamptal
"Intensely golden-yellow in color, the NV Tradition Heritage Cuvée 50 Years Edition 850 blends several grape varieties and a wide range of vintages from the last 50 years, starting with the 1970 vintage. The nose opens precise, lean and fresh, with bright and spicy fruit and flinty notes. On the palate, this treasure is crystalline, tight, reductive and very elegant, with a long and tensioned finish. This Jubilee edition reveals remarkable finesse and grip and represents the historical spirit and substance of the castle. Due to the matured wines from the 1970s and 1980s, this is a leaner, more filigreed style than the newer assemblages that contain only barrel-stored reserve wines from the Michael Moosbrugger era. The wine is doubtlessly very impressive. To create the blend, many bottles of the wine library were opened, tasted and decanted into small vessels that were then, little by little, blended into a cuvée. "It demands a clarity of vision and long years of experience with the wines of the Danube River region to compose a cuvée of this style," says Moosbrugger. "The different soils and the various grape varieties demand an understanding of their nature and their functionality in a blend, in order to create a wine like this."
Thirty-three percent of the cuvée is from vintages of the most recent decade (2011, 2013, 2014 and 2017), 37% from 2000, 2002-2005, 2007 and 2009), 7% from the 1990s (1991, 1993, 1994, 1996, 1998, 1999), 12% from the 1980s (1980, 1981-1984, 1986, 1987, 1989) and 11% from the 1970s (1970, 1971, 1973, 1974, 1977 und 1979). As Michael Mooesbrugger says, "The Jubilee cuvée combines 25 years of monastic culture with 25 years of modern wine culture." (Moosbrugger started at Schloss Gobelsburg in 1996, so exactly 25 years ago.)..." 98 Points, Stephen Reinhardt, Wine Advocate

Schloss Gobelsburg Kammern Gruner Veltliner Ried Lamm 1 OTW 2019, 0.75L
Gruner Veltliner from Kamptal, Niederösterreich
"The intensely yellow-colored 2019 Kammern Ried Lamm 1ÖTW was vinified in new 50-hectoliter oak vats and aged on the fine lees until July 2020. The nose is clearly influenced by its crystalline subsoils and delivers a coolish-mineral, flinty tone next to the perfectly ripe, elegant and finely concentrated white fruit that is discreet and refined like green tea. On the palate, this is a rich, piquant, very elegant, highly refined and persistently salty Veltliner that develops an enormously long and complex, finely tannic and sustainably structured finish. This is a great, very promising wine that assembles everything in the starting block to go a long distance. 13.5% alcohol. Donnhoff Pinot Brut 2017, 0.75L
Pinot Noir from Nahe, Nahe
"Famous, steeply sloping vineyard in a small side valley of the middle section of the Nahe River. The “Höllenpfad” (“Path to Hell”) name is an old one, likely referencing both the vineyard‘s steep slope as well as the unique color of the red sandstone. The surrounding landscape is bathed daily in the rich, warm light of the evening sun as it reflects off the hillside‘s distinctive red soil. It‘s also not hard to imagine that the word „Hell“ might have been uttered by many a winegrower after a particularly laborious day on these steep slopes. The weathered warm sandstone of the Rotliegend strata lends the wines their inimitable character. Grapes grown here tend to be very small with intense, nuanced aromas; the resulting wines are elegant with a spicy mineral fruit and excellent aging potential." Importer Notes

Von Winning Riesling Sekt Extra-Brut NV, 0.75L
Riesling from Pfalz, Pfalz
"I’ve never had much luck with German sparkling wines, often finding them overly tart and acidic. But Anne Krebiehl, author of “The Wines of Germany,” an excellent book published in 2019, believes the category has great potential, especially those sparklers made of riesling, like this one. Von Winning often ferments its wines in small oak barrels, unusual with riesling, and it wouldn’t surprise me if barrels were used for this sparkler. It’s toasty, creamy and substantial, yet dry, refreshing and balanced." Eric Asimov, New York Times

Dautel Spätburgunder 2018, 0.75L
Pinot Noir from Württemberg, Württemberg
"The 2018 Spätburgunder trocken displays a dark cherry color and opens with a pure and refreshing, yet still reductive bouquet of blackcurrant, cherries, cassis, underwood, toast and iodine. Bottled with 13% alcohol this is a very charming, light-footed and refreshing Pinot with a silky-texture, stimulating acidity and phenolic grip. The wine is fine and intense, always fresh and tight on the finish, representing a great vintage for Pinot Noir—the finish is pure, long and intensely fruity yet without sweetness or any masking oaky, toasty notes. Kofererhof Sylvaner R 2019, 0.75L
Sylvaner from Alto Adige Valle Isarco, Trentino Alto Adige Südtirol
"The 2019 Sylvaner R is deeper and richer than the 2020 beside it, with nuances of vanilla bean and dusty white flowers blossoming into crushed pears and hints of sweet spice. This impresses with the silkiest of textures that are cut by a laser-like core of bright acids and penetrating citrus tones. It all results in a long and stimulating finale with a salty flourish that goes on and on, further complemented by hints of candied lime that linger. Hold onto your seat when tasting because this is one of the top wines being made in Alto Adige today. Frankly stated, Günther Kerschbaumer of Köfererhof is currently making some of the best wines in Alto Adige today. Located in the Isarco River valley, this family-run operation is considered one of the smaller growers in the region, even with their 80,000-bottle production. While Kerschbaumer is fully aware of just how well his wines are being received, he remains completely humble. In fact, you're more likely to find him working in the vineyard before anywhere else. He oversees all practices throughout their six hectares of estate vines and five hectares of long-held, contracted parcels throughout the valley. All practices have been organic since before 1995, when the winery began bottling. Elevations range from 650 to 850 meters above sea level and all on steep, well-draining slopes. Kerschbaumer firmly believes that it’s the terroir that matters most, and as such the wines go through spontaneous fermentations, and nearly all of them are refined in stainless steel, with the exception of the Sylvaner R, where the wine matures in acacia wood casks. When tasting the Sylvaner R, you really taste the potential of this producer and the region as a whole. Check in on the wines of Köfererhof sooner rather than later because while there’s no talk of prices going up at this time, it’s only so long before this producer is truly discovered." 94+ Eric Guido, Vinous
"The Köfererhof 2019 Alto Adige Valle Isarco Sylvaner R is sharp and bright and held tightly together by a pretty limestone note of crushed stone. In addition to that mineral definition, you also get hints of tropical fruit, white peach and Golden Delicious apple. You might try this white with a bouillabaisse, from the South of France, or some other fish-stew recipe in your Rolodex." 93 Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

Ciacci Piccolomini d`Aragona Brunello di Montalcino 2017, 0.75L
Sangiovese from Brunello di Montalcino, Tuscany
"Aromas of cedar, berry, mushroom and burnt orange follow through to a full body with medium, chewy tannins and a fluid, flavorful finish. Not overdone." 93 Points, James Suckling, JamesSukling.com
"Generous, layered and rich, the Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona 2017 Brunello di Montalcino shows the generous fruit and deep layering that identifies this vintage . . . . This edition (with 69,000 bottles made) shows a bright note of sweet cherry that features strongly both on the bouquet and the palate. The wine shows lots of soft fruit with almond, spice and wild rose. From a hot and dry vintage . . . . The Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona estate is located in a rather cool location with south-facing vines and well-draining galestro soils on the back side of Castelbuovo dell'Abate. I always like to think of this tiny hilltop hamlet as the place where the day's sunbeams shine in Montalcino before sunset. This estate is certified for organic farming. 93 Monica Larner, Wine Advocate
"Rich and lively, exuding cherry, plum and blackberry fruit, with accents of earth and underbrush. Harmonious and accessible now, with fine length and a lingering, mineral-tinged finish." 93 Wine Spectator

La Serena Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Gemini 2015, 0.75L
Sangiovese from Brunello di Montalcino, Tuscany
"The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Gemini is fruit-forward and a bit extroverted yet impossible to ignore. It boasts a striking mix with intense raspberry preserves, exotic spices and dusty dried florals. Its textures are soft and fleshy, creating a creamy feel to its radiant, ripe fruit profile, while maintaining balance through brisk acids and grippy tannins. The 2015 Gemini takes a turn toward austerity, finishing structured and grippy; yet through it all, sweet violet florals resonate. This may be a full-throttle and extroverted effort, but it’s well balanced and sure to have a lot of fans. Important to note that this was checked in on, and held up beautifully over the course of three days." 94 Points, Eric Guido, Vinous

Le Potazzine Brunello di Montalcino 2017, 0.75L
from Brunello di Montalcino, Tuscany
"The ladies of Le Potazzine make a terrific bottle of Brunello, and their high-elevation vineyards are especially important in maintaining freshness in a scorching-hot vintage such as this. The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino offers a pretty succession of wild berry, cherry and plum aromas, along with light spice, crushed flowers and perfumed potting soil. This wine is also distinguished by a touch of bay leaf and maybe a warmer note of cured tobacco as well. This is an impressive effort (with 16,000 bottles released)." 95 Points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

Scopetone Brunello di Montalcino 2016, 0.75L
Sangiovese from Brunello di Montalcino, Tuscany
"The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino dazzles with a display of sour cherries, sage and clove with hints of cedar, licorice and flowery undergrowth. The balance here is spot-on, as silky textures give way to ripe red berries offset by tactile minerals, sour citrus and brisk acids which add lift and cooling freshness. Its tannins mount steadily toward the close in a classically dry and structured expression under an air of inner florals. What a beautifully pure expression of Sangiovese." 93 Points Eric Guido, Vinous
"Mid ruby. Lots of concentration and complexity. Racy acidity embedded in a layer of ripe fruit. Gorgeous interplay of energetic, concentrated fruit and bags of grainy tannins. Lots of depth while maintaining a medium-bodied weight throughout." 18/20 Points Walter Speller, JancisRobinson.com

Scopetone Rosso di Montalcino 2016, 0.75L
Sangiovese from Rosso di Montalcino, Tuscany
"The 2016 Rosso di Montalcino is very pretty, understated and very delicious. Readers will find an soft-spoken Rosso that is all about persistence, delicacy and class. The 2016 is not an obvious wine, but it is compelling. Sweet floral and red cherry notes perk up the brilliant finish in this light to medium-bodied Rosso from Scopetone." 90 Points Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Lo Triolet Pinot Noir 2018, 0.75L
Pinot Noir from Valle d'Aosta, Valle d'Aosta
"With glacier soils and extreme, high-altitude weather, Valle d'Aosta is one of the most difficult places to grow Pinot Noir, not to mention the arduous task of farming its steep slopes. However, the Lo Triolet 2018 Vallée d'Aoste Pinot Noir makes it look easy thanks to the careful balance and delicate varietal flavors inherent to this wine. It reveals blue flower, rosebud, orange peel, nutmeg and crushed stone. This is a silky, polished and lean-bodied expression to celebrate with an aged Formagella from one of Valle d'Aosta's many cheesemaking valleys." 94 Points Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

Eigashima Brewery (White Oak Distillery) Akashi Japanese Blended Whiskey NV, 0.75L
Whisky from Akashi, Hyogo Prefecture
"Designed to be an approachable, sipping whisky, Akashi Whisky has a malty, citrusy characteristic complemented by hints of salinity due to its coastal location. This whisky is distilled from wheat, barley and rye with notes of subtle peat, aged in ex-bourbon, barley shochu, and sherry barrels. Flavors of vanilla and pine nuts delight on the palate, leading to a long, wheaty finish. Casco Viejo Tequila Blanco NV, 1L
Tequila from Jalisco, Jalisco
"Produced by the revered Camarena family in the iconic distilling town of Arandas, Casco Viejo Tequila is an outstanding entry-level tequila. Blending tradition and modernism, the family operates the same estate grounds they’ve worked since the 1830s, while employing a patented production process called Zero D which integrates recycling into all aspects of the tequila-making process.
Casco Viejo is made entirely from Blue Weber agave grown in the Los Altos region of Jalisco; this highland plateau, around 7,000 above sea level, is widely regarded as one of the top agave producing environments in Mexico by virtue of its iron- and clay-rich red soil, hot days of sun exposure and cooling breezy nights. Production is vertically integrated, as the Camarena family owns 18 fields of agave. The agave is cooked in traditional brick furnaces, fermented in wooden vats and distilled twice in traditional copper pot stills." Importer Notes, Skurnik Wines & Spirits

Condesa Clasica Gin NV, 0.75L
Gin from Mexico City, Mexico City
"Condesa Clásica Gin expands on a powerful botanical base of juniper to explore distinctly Mexican aromatics and spiritual traditions. Distilled using copper pot stills and built upon a Mexican-sourced neutral grain distillate of corn, rye, wheat, and barley; thirteen botanicals including juniper, palo santo, white sage, jasmine, coriander, elderflower, lavender, rosemary, cedron, myrrh, lime & orange zests echo the curandera (healer) traditions that use many of these same ingredients to cleanse negative energy, attract love, and expand consciousness. Jasmine, white sage, and the citrusy, faintly confectionary wood of the Palo Santo tree dominate this unique yet approachable gin. 43% ABV." Importer Notes

Cuish Mezcal Espadín Agave Angustifolia NV, 0.75L
Mezcal from Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca
"In case you haven’t heard, we are big-time espadín advocates at Skurnik Wines and Spirits. Since the recent surge in popularity of mezcales made from numerous rare or wild agave, the once noble espadín has fallen into disrepute, often seen as commonplace and basic. This false impression could hardly be more incorrect. Truth is, the sugar-rich espadín has been the lifeblood of mezcal producing families for decades, and is often the most revered variety for its adaptability and generous yield, giving it a central role in social, civic and spiritual events for Oaxacan mezcal communities. Produced by maestro mezcalero Jose Santiago López in Santiago Matatlán, the heart of mezcal in Oaxaca, and rested in glass for two years, this espadín is a beautiful example of the variety’s diversity: full of ebullient aromatics like citrus peel, fresh bark, and sweet red berries. 48% ABV" Importer Notes, Skurnik Wines & Spirits

Amormata Mezcal Ensamble Tradicional NV, 0.75L
Mezcal from Tamaulipas, Tamaulipas
"In the border state of Tamaulipas, agave distillates have a unique history all their own, exemplified by this beautiful ensamble (blend) from maestro Jose Castellanos. Three different agave are used in equal proportion: Agave asperrima and Agave americana, both referred to generically as “Maguey” (Spanish for “agave”), with the smaller Agave univittata, locally dubbed “Amole”. All three are harvested and cooked together in a conical earthen oven; their caramelized juices are then squeezed out using an antique sugarcane press, or “trapiche”, while the fibers are discarded. During U.S. Prohibition, moonshine-style stills were smuggled over the border from Texas and became the favored local method: a traditional pot still is amended with a wooden barrel or “thumper” acting as a condenser between the pot and the coil. The resulting mezcal is wildly unique, with a distinct and delightful funkiness found nowhere else in Mexico." Importer Notes, Skurnik Wines & Spirits

Dominio de Anza Parcelario I Diego Magana 2020, 0.75L
Mencía / Bastardo / Garnacha Tintorera from Bierzo, Castilla Y Leon
"There is no 2019, so we jumped to the 2020 Dominio de Anza Parcelario I from a vineyard in Otero on slate soils that fermented with 100% full clusters and matured in one 225-liter oak barrel. It's different from the wines from Valtuille and has more freshness. It has moderate ripeness and alcohol (12.7%); if Valtuille is more Rhône, this would be more Burgundy. I like this a little bit better than the El Rapolao. Unfortunately, there are only 300 bottles of this—it's what the vineyard delivers. In 2021, he used two plots and produced a little more wine, but he doesn't yet know if it's going to be blended or kept separate, perhaps with a more defined name." 96+ Points, Luis Guiterrez, Wine Advocate

Youthfully chewy and alluringly sweet, offering concentrated, spice-laced black raspberry, bitter cherry, boysenberry and succulent herb flavors sharpened by a jolt of juicy acidity. Finishes sweet, smoky and extremely long, showing solid grip and mounting tannins that add framework to the intense dark fruit." 94 Points Josh Raynolds, Vinous

La Vizcaina (Raúl Pérez) Bierzo Las Gundiñas 2020, 0.75L
Mencía from Bierzo, Castilla y León
"The 2020 La Vizcaína Las Gundiñas has a new plot, a west-facing vineyard that is steeper and cooler. Pérez likes Gundiñas and Rapolao in warmer years like this. In 2020, 50% of the wine matured in 2,000-liter oak foudre and the other half in used 500-liter barrels. It was harvested much earlier, and the wine shows more freshness even if it shows more tannin today. He likes long macerations (40 to 45 days) and works toward having tannins and weight in his wines. Some 6,000 bottles were filled in August 2021." 95+ Luis Guiterrez, Wine Advocate

It's varietal and expressive and comes from two plots, one with sandy soils and another one in Cacabelos with some boulders. There's always a small percentage of Doña Blanca in the blend. Raúl Pérez 'Ultreia La Claudina' Godello Bierzo 2020, 0.75L
Godello from Bierzo, Castilla y León
"They have lowered the alcohol and ripeness in most of the whites, but some vineyards are more difficult than others... The 2020 Ultreia La Claudina comes from a plot on sandy soils that needs higher ripeness to avoid excess bitterness. In 2020 it matured in 50% new barrels as they wanted to see how the wine behaved. It has power and consistence, but the style is a little different from what the wine was before, a little creamier and marked by the élevage. It's more exuberant and quite the opposite from the rectitude of La del Vivo. There are some 2,200 bottles from 1,700 liters of wine." 94 Points, Luis Guiterrez, Wine Advocate

"They had not bottled the 2020 Ultreia Saint Jacques yet and were still waiting for the labels (and they label the day after they bottle), so I caught an unbottled sample that was very tender and fruit-driven, primary and quite open. He used more stems and full clusters in 2020, and since 2018, they have removed the percentage of white grapes that used to be included in the wine. It's a little more Mediterranean, with aromatic herbs and a more powerful palate..." 93-94 Points, Luis Guiterrez, Wine Advocate

Like the Chardonnay, this vintage was sourced entirely from the Donnachadh estate, although that may not be the case in the future. It has a pale ruby color and very pure, fragrant scents of cranberry, raspberry, strawberry, bergamot, tea leaves and herbs. The medium-bodied palate is finely chalky and wonderfully fresh, boasting concentrated red berry flavors, fine citrusy accents and a long, ethereal finish. Jaimee Motley Wines Peter Martin Ray Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Santa Cruz Mountains 2018, 0.75L
Cabernet Sauvignon from Santa Cruz Mountains, California
"Jaimee Motley's 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Peter Martin Ray is shaping up to be a jewel of a wine. Rich and layered in the glass, the 2018 has that extra kick of mid-palate density and volume that the 2017 doesn't, the result of a far more even and favorable growing season. Dark plum, mint, lavender, spice and dried herbs all develop with a bit of air, but it is the wine's balance that is most compelling. The 50% whole clusters are barely perceptible.
