Most producers release their wines young, and if you want something with real bottle age, you’re usually paying a premium. This is different. The 2017 Scherer Sonoma County Pinot Noir comes from one of the most respected and independent winemakers in California. Fred Scherer helped put Russian River Valley Pinot Noir on the map, and he still makes wine entirely on his own terms. This bottling is built from lots that didn’t make it into his Russian River Valley label. But here’s the thing. When your entire philosophy is to capture the best expression of Russian River Pinot Noir, even the “cut” fruit still delivers serious quality. And now, with nine years of bottle age, this wine is right in its sweet spot. The 2017 vintage was warm, but carefully managed. The fruit was picked before heat spikes and fires, preserving balance and freshness. In the glass, it delivers everything you want from aged Pinot Noir. Red cherry, cinnamon spice, silky texture, and that classic Russian River “spice box” character. The tannins are resolved, the wine is seamless, and there’s still enough freshness to keep it vibrant. Antonio Galloni awarded the wine 91 points, noting its aromatic lift and balance. The winery price is around $42. Today, it’s $27.98. For a properly aged Pinot Noir from a top-tier producer, that’s an opportunity you just don’t see very often. If you’ve ever wanted to experience what mature Pinot Noir tastes like without spending a fortune, this is the bottle.
