This is how California Pinot Noir should be made and priced. The Dude Pinot Noir comes from two excellent vineyards in the Sebastopol Hills, right between Sebastopol and Freestone. Sandy soils. Cool climate influence. Long growing season. This is classic Russian River Valley territory, and in 2023 the conditions lined up perfectly. The wine is made by Marc Canepa and Neil Cote, two guys who are deeply connected in the North Coast wine world. They sell barrels for a living, which means they know everyone and have access to incredible fruit. More importantly, they know how to make wine and they choose not to play the overpricing game that has hurt California Pinot over the last decade. This is a serious Pinot Noir made with intent. Thirty five percent new French oak, which is almost unheard of at this price point, but the wine handles it beautifully. The fruit has the depth and structure to carry it without ever feeling oaky or overdone. In the glass, this wine delivers exactly what you want. Spicy aromatics, black cherry and red fruit, polished tannins, and a supple, velvety texture. It is cool climate in structure but generous in flavor. Not jammy. Not green. Just right. The 2023 vintage gave the winemakers time. Long hang time, balanced ripeness, and real flavor development. The result is a Pinot Noir that feels complete and confident rather than pushed. At $24.98, this wine completely outkicks its coverage. It drinks like a much more expensive Russian River Pinot and proves that California can still deliver serious quality at a sensible price. If you love Pinot Noir and want something you can actually open on a Tuesday night without regret, this is the move. Dude.
