Between tariffs, exchange rates, and growing global demand, it’s no longer unusual to see entry-level Barolo priced well over $70 or even $100. Which makes wines like this so exciting. The 2021 Luigi Einaudi Barolo Ludo comes from one of Piedmont’s long-established producers, known for crafting classic Nebbiolo that captures both power and finesse. The 2021 vintage is widely regarded as one of the great recent Barolo years, joining standout vintages like 2010, 2013, 2016, and 2019. The wines combine concentration with freshness, delivering beautifully balanced expressions of Nebbiolo. What makes this bottling particularly compelling is its source material. Fruit comes from several outstanding Barolo sites including Cannubi, Monvigliero, and other prestigious vineyards. While the estate’s single-vineyard wines highlight these sites individually, the Ludo blends fruit from these locations to create a harmonious and deeply expressive Barolo. In the glass, the wine shows classic Nebbiolo character. Rose petals, tar, orange peel, and ripe strawberry notes unfold with layers of spice, minerality, and savory complexity. Wine Spectator awarded the wine 94 points, a serious score in a competitive vintage. The price? Just $45. For a Barolo from a respected Piedmont producer in one of the great modern vintages, that kind of value is getting harder and harder to find.
