It is one of the most iconic vineyards in the world, home to some of the greatest Cabernet and Carmenère ever made. Wines that routinely score in the high 90s and sell for well over $100 a bottle. But here is the part most people do not know. More than half of the Clos Apalta vineyard was planted after 1997, using selections from the original century old vines. Those vines are now twenty to twenty five years old, fully mature, and producing exceptional fruit in their own right. Prelude is the wine that gives you access to that fruit. This is the inaugural release of Clos Apalta Prelude, and it is made entirely from those younger vine parcels. The blend is classic Apalta. Carmenère leads, supported by Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. Everything is fermented in large format vats and aged in mostly neutral French oak, with just a small portion of new barrels to add polish without masking the vineyard. The result is a wine that feels unmistakably Clos Apalta, but with a very different mission. In the glass, this wine is vibrant, juicy, and immediately appealing. The fruit is expressive and pure. Soft, easy tannins. Bright energy. No green notes. No heaviness. It coats the palate, but it also has tension and lift that keep it fresh. This is not a wine you hide in the cellar for a decade. This is the wine you drink now while your Clos Apalta ages. James Suckling awarded it 95 points, and the wine is already showing beautifully. Here is the kicker. This wine hits the shelf under $30. That is an absurd price for fruit from one of the world’s great vineyards, made by one of the most respected teams in Chile. If you have ever wanted to understand why Clos Apalta is so revered, this is the most approachable and affordable way to do it. Yes please. And thank you.
