That's exactly what happened with the 2018 Domaine FL Anjou Rouge. When we traveled to Wine Paris, we weren't looking for mature Loire Valley red wine. We were hunting for older Rhône, Bordeaux, and other classics. Then someone poured us this bottle, and within minutes, we completely changed our buying plans. Sometimes the wine finds you. Most wine lovers know Domaine FL for its exceptional Chenin Blanc. Founded by Philippe Fournier Longchamps, the estate was created after he acquired two historic Loire Valley properties in 2006 and 2007, combining them into one of Anjou's benchmark biodynamic domaines. While the whites have long earned international acclaim, tasting the reds reminded us that the Loire has another remarkable story to tell. That story begins with the vintage. The 2018 growing season was the hottest and driest the Loire had experienced since the legendary 1947 vintage. For Cabernet Franc, that mattered enormously. In cooler years, Cabernet Franc can sometimes show the herbal, leafy character that divides opinion among wine drinkers. But sustained warmth allows the fruit to ripen completely, softening those green edges and revealing the grape's darker, richer personality. That's exactly what happened in 2018. The blend of 80% Cabernet Franc and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, grown biodynamically on vineyards surrounding the estate, delivers a style that almost feels like a crossroads between Right Bank Bordeaux, Mendoza, and the Loire Valley, combining richness, freshness, and remarkable energy in equal measure. Everything is aged in neutral French oak, allowing the purity of the fruit and the character of the terroir to take center stage. Now, with several years of bottle age, the wine has entered a beautiful place. Blackcurrant, cassis, blackberry, graphite, violets, cedar, and spice leap from the glass, while the palate delivers silky texture, ripe tannins, and a vibrant acidity that keeps the wine remarkably fresh despite the warmth of the vintage. It has the depth of a serious Bordeaux blend but with the unmistakable lift and energy that only the Loire can provide. This isn't simply a good value. It's one of those wines that completely resets your expectations of what $20 can buy. James Suckling awarded the 2018 Domaine FL Anjou Rouge 94 points, praising one of the greatest Loire Valley red wine vintages in recent memory. Add biodynamic farming, mature bottle age, and one of Anjou's finest producers, and it's hard to imagine a stronger value anywhere in France. For just $19.98, you're getting a wine that drinks with the pedigree of bottles costing two or three times as much. This wasn't the wine we were looking for. It turned out to be one of the best wines we found.
