You buy the wine young. You cellar it. And then you hope you’re patient enough to leave it alone for a decade. This time, somebody else already did the hard part. The 2016 Château Corbin is a fully mature Saint-Émilion Grand Cru from one of Bordeaux’s greatest modern vintages, and it’s entering exactly the stage where great Bordeaux starts becoming truly compelling. And the timing here matters. The 2016 vintage was the first under the fully modernized vision of Anabelle Cruse-Bardinet, who completely renovated the château and rebuilt the winemaking facilities before this vintage came in. Combined with the structure and precision of the 2016 growing season, the result was a major leap forward for the estate. This is serious Right Bank terroir. Château Corbin sits in the northern section of Saint-Émilion, bordering some of the most famous estates in Bordeaux, including Cheval Blanc and La Conseillante nearby across the appellation lines. The vineyards here combine gravel and clay soils, planted primarily to Merlot with Cabernet Franc adding aromatic lift and structure. The wine receives full Grand Cru treatment. Hand-harvested fruit, careful sorting, and aging in about 50% new French oak. Now, nearly a decade later, everything is starting to come together beautifully. The nose shows violets, plum, graphite, and earthy complexity, while the palate delivers that unmistakable 2016 structure softened by time and layered with rich, polished fruit. This is not soft, simple Bordeaux. This is classic Bordeaux entering its drinking window. Critics agreed from the beginning. 93+ points from Wine Advocate and 93 points from James Suckling, strong praise for a wine that now tastes even better with bottle age. And then there’s the price. $39.98. For a ten-year-old Saint-Émilion Grand Cru from the legendary 2016 vintage, that’s an absurd value. Especially when the wine is already drinking this well. This is exactly why people fall in love with Bordeaux.
