"You can't find affordable Burgundy anymore." While prices in famous villages like Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, and Chassagne-Montrachet have soared, that doesn't mean great Burgundy has disappeared. It simply means you have to know where to look. That's exactly why wines like this continue to excite us. Domaine Michel Goubard has quietly built a reputation for producing some of the Côte Chalonnaise's finest values. A multi-generational family estate, the domaine farms vineyards that sit just beyond Burgundy's most famous addresses, allowing them to focus on exceptional farming rather than famous zip codes. Today, Michel's sons oversee much of the day-to-day work, continuing the family's commitment to honest, terroir-driven Chardonnay. The story behind this vineyard is especially compelling. The Mont Avril parcel had remained unplanted since the early 1900s. Steep, difficult to farm, and hardly the easiest place to establish a vineyard, it remained untouched for decades until Michel Goubard took on the challenge of replanting the hillside in 1990. It was a true labor of love, restoring a forgotten site with limestone and clay soils that are ideally suited to Chardonnay. The 2022 vintage brought beautifully ripe fruit while preserving freshness, producing a Chardonnay that's vibrant, expressive, and wonderfully balanced. Made entirely from 100% Chardonnay, the wine is fermented and aged exclusively in stainless steel, allowing the purity of the fruit and mineral character to shine without the influence of oak. The aromatics are immediately inviting. Fresh green apple, pear, citrus blossom, crushed stone, and orchard fruit lead into a palate that is crisp yet generous, combining lively acidity with a satisfying richness through the mid-palate. There's an effortless drinkability here that makes the wine incredibly versatile. This is the kind of bottle that belongs in an ice bucket on the patio while the grill heats up. It's equally at home with grilled seafood, roast chicken, summer salads, or simply shared with friends on a warm evening. Historically, this wine has consistently earned 90+ point reviews from critics including Robert Parker's Wine Advocate and Jeb Dunnuck, an impressive accomplishment for a humble Bourgogne Blanc. More importantly, it has built a loyal following by delivering authentic Burgundy character at a price that's becoming increasingly difficult to find. Great Burgundy isn't gone. Sometimes you just have to venture a little farther off the beaten path to find it.
