This is the opposite. The Bedrock Old Vine Zinfandel 2023 is built from some of the most historic vineyards in California, with an average vine age of around 80 years. That’s not normal at this price. Half of the fruit comes from legendary sites like Bedrock Vineyard planted in 1888, along with century-old vineyards across Sonoma and beyond. These are vineyards that many producers would bottle on their own at much higher prices. And yet, it all ends up here. That’s the philosophy behind Bedrock. Led by Morgan Twain-Peterson, one of the most respected Zinfandel producers in California, the goal is simple: preserve historic vineyards and make wines that overdeliver for the price. The winemaking reflects that approach. Mostly native fermentation, aging in older barrels, and almost no new oak. The focus is entirely on letting the fruit and the vineyards speak. In the glass, it delivers everything you want from great Zinfandel. Bramble, raspberry, spice, and a touch of pepper, all wrapped in a wine that has real structure and balance. This is not jammy, overblown Zinfandel. It’s focused, energetic, and incredibly drinkable. Critics agree. Scores in the low to mid 90s confirm what the glass already tells you. And then there’s the price. $24. For old vine California Zinfandel from vineyards like these, that’s almost unheard of. If you love California wine, this is one of the easiest buys you’ll make all year.
