The best wines are getting more expensive every year. But every once in a while, you find something that completely breaks the model. This is one of those wines. Marange is a lesser-known appellation in the Côte Chalonnaise, just south of the Côte d’Or. For years, it flew under the radar. Not anymore. With warmer vintages and better vineyard practices, Maranges is now producing wines with real depth, concentration, and structure, often rivaling far more expensive Burgundy. This bottling comes from 60+ year old vines, farmed with a hands-off approach using native fermentations and minimal new oak. The wine is then finished in cement to bring everything into balance before bottling. In the glass, it shows a deeper, richer style of Pinot Noir. Black cherry, dark fruit, and a subtle cool-climate edge, with silky tannins and impressive structure. It’s powerful, but still precise. A rare combination. Critics were stunned. 92–94 points from Neal Martin, placing it in the same scoring range as some of the most expensive wines in Burgundy, including Grand Crus that sell for thousands of dollars. And that’s where this gets interesting. Because this wine is not priced like those wines. At around $59, it delivers a level of quality that competes far above its category. This is what smart Burgundy buying looks like right now.
