But some of the most exciting wines are the ones flying under the radar. Château Mangot is one of those estates. Located in Saint-Émilion, with vineyards neighboring top-tier properties, the estate has quietly been elevating its quality for years through biodynamic farming and meticulous vineyard work. And with each vintage, the wines keep getting better. The “District 13” 2020 is a perfect example of that evolution. This is a micro-cuvée sourced from just five and a half acres, with only select parcels making the final blend. Production is extremely limited, and the wine is crafted with an attention to detail rarely seen at this price point. The blend is 40 percent Cabernet Franc, 40 percent Merlot, and 20 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, an unusually Cabernet-heavy mix for the Right Bank that adds structure and lift. The winemaking leans almost Burgundian. The wine is aged across a mix of used oak and amphora, preserving purity while adding texture and nuance without overwhelming the fruit. In the glass, it delivers both power and elegance. Blueberry, plum, and blackcurrant fruit are layered with subtle cedar, leather, and spice. The tannins are incredibly fine and silky, giving the wine a seamless, polished feel across the palate. Critics have taken notice. 95 points, placing it firmly among the top values in Saint-Émilion for the vintage. And then there’s the price. $34.98. For a wine with this level of pedigree, this kind of production, and this quality in the glass, that’s a rare opportunity. And it is genuinely rare. Only 180 bottles were available. When wines like this show up, they don’t last.
