What Grows Right Above One of the World’s Greatest Vineyards?

At least not the way Burgundy defines itself. The Gros Frère et Sœur “Chemin de Vergy” Pinot Noir 2023 is grown just above Vosne-Romanée, within walking distance of some of the most expensive vineyards in the world, including La Tâche. Same grape. Same soils. Same slope. But it’s not classified as Burgundy. Why? Because when the appellation lines were drawn in the 1930s, this site wasn’t planted. It was forest. And once those lines were set, they never went back. So now you have a vineyard sitting just 300 feet above La Tâche, producing Pinot Noir from Vosne clones on limestone soils, made by one of the top producers in the region. And it can’t say Burgundy on the label. That’s the opportunity. The history here goes even deeper. This site was once a walled vineyard, a “clos,” farmed by Cistercian monks over 1,000 years ago. They knew this was prime land. Over time, it was abandoned, lost, and eventually rediscovered. In 2014, the Gros family replanted it. And now, after years of waiting for the vines to mature, this is the moment. The 2023 vintage is the breakthrough. The wine finally delivers what the site promised. In the glass, it’s everything you want from top-tier Pinot Noir. Silk, spice, depth, and that unmistakable Vosne-style richness, with a layered texture and real length on the finish. It has the body, the suppleness, and the complexity that you expect from elite Burgundy. And it’s only going to get better from here. Production is tiny. Just around 10 cases available. For a wine with this story, this location, and this upside, that’s not going to last. If you’re looking for the next frontier of Burgundy, this is it.
