Let’s start with the producer. Russell Bevan is one of Napa Valley’s most accomplished winemakers, with multiple 100 point wines to his name. His style is rich and powerful, but what sets him apart is the precision and purity he brings to that power. Now let’s talk about where this wine comes from. The backbone of Ontogeny is fruit from the Tench Vineyard in Oakville, one of Napa’s most prized sites. And it just happens to sit right next door to Screaming Eagle. That’s the level we’re talking about. The blend is primarily Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by smaller amounts of Bordeaux varieties from top sites like Sugarloaf Mountain, creating a wine that is both powerful and layered. And then there’s the vintage. 2019 is one of the greatest Napa Cabernet vintages of the last decade, delivering both richness and balance. Critics took notice. Jeb Dunnuck awarded the wine 98 points and called it the #1 value of the entire 2019 Napa vintage. In the glass, it delivers exactly what you’d expect from that pedigree. Dark fruit, silky texture, and beautifully integrated tannins, with a level of polish that feels far more expensive than the price suggests. This is the kind of wine that, if you were told it cost $300, you wouldn’t question it. And yet, it doesn’t. Even better, this release comes with additional bottle age, allowing the wine to show even more complexity and integration than when it first hit the market. For Napa Cabernet lovers, this is one you don’t overthink.
