96 Points... and You've Probably Never Heard of It”

Domaine de Galuval Cairanne Blanc La Vallée 2022 Link to the wine: https://www.winex.com/domaine-de-galuval-cairanne-blanc-la-vallee-2022.html Join our Daily Email Offer List: https://cdn.forms-content.sg-form.com/f3da488a-d10b-11ee-94a3-62718bdc6118 A traveling French salesman walked through our door with a handful of wines we'd never tasted. We did what we always do: opened the bottles and let the wines make their case. This one made a very convincing argument. Domaine Galuval is located in Cairanne, a Southern Rhône village northeast of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and neighboring Rasteau. Once part of the broader Côtes du Rhône Villages appellation, Cairanne was elevated to full Cru status in 2016, putting it into the same hierarchy as some of the Rhône's most recognizable villages. But here's where things get interesting. This isn't the powerful Grenache-based red you might expect from the Southern Rhône. It's a serious, remarkably textured white Rhône built around Roussanne, blended with other traditional varieties including Grenache Blanc, Clairette and Viognier. And Roussanne completely changes the equation. Domaine Galuval was established in the 1920s and possesses significant old-vine holdings, but this wine comes from younger plantings situated in the Vallée de Galuval, a small valley with clay and silt-rich soils. That heavy clay provides valuable water retention in the warm Southern Rhône climate, creating an unusually favorable environment for white varieties. Roussanne accounts for roughly 40 to 50% of the blend, and the wine is aged entirely in barrel. The result has considerably more weight and gravitas than your typical Southern Rhône white. There's a beautiful green-gold color in the glass, followed by ripe pear, stone fruit, tropical fruit, flowers, nuts, subtle vanilla and the distinctive waxy, savory complexity that makes great Roussanne so compelling. The barrel aging provides texture rather than overwhelming oakiness, while Grenache Blanc contributes generosity and the other varieties bring additional aromatic lift. It's rich. It's dense. But there's also brightness and energy running through the entire wine. Frankly, it tastes expensive. Apparently we weren't the only ones who thought so. At the Decanter World Wine Awards, where wines are evaluated blind by panels of professional tasters and regional experts, this Cairanne Blanc received an extraordinary 96 points. That's a remarkable result for a wine from an appellation whose whites rarely receive this kind of attention. And that's exactly why blind tasting can be so revealing. No famous label. No prestigious appellation influencing expectations. Just what's in the glass. And this wine delivered. Then comes our favorite part: It's about $25. For a barrel-aged, Roussanne-driven Cru Rhône Blanc carrying 96 points from one of the world's largest blind wine competitions, that's an extraordinary amount of wine for the money. You may never have heard of Domaine Galuval. You may barely know Cairanne. Neither did we. That's why we taste everything.
