Big fruit. Soft tannins. Lots of oak. This is not that. The Altos Las Hormigas Vista Flores Malbec 2024 is a completely different take on Malbec, focused entirely on terroir, purity, and balance. That starts in the vineyard. The fruit comes from the Uco Valley in Mendoza, one of the highest-quality regions in Argentina, where altitude brings freshness, structure, and aromatic lift. And then they do something most producers don’t. They step back. No heavy oak. No manipulation. No masking the fruit. Fermented with native yeast and aged primarily in concrete, with only neutral, untoasted oak used sparingly, the goal is simple: Let the vineyard speak. And it does. In the glass, this wine is all about florals and lift. You still get that classic Malbec blue fruit, but what stands out is the freshness, the balance, and the purity. There’s no heaviness here. No sweetness. Just clean, vibrant, incredibly drinkable wine. Critics noticed. This is the only Malbec under $20 to score 94 points from Vinous in recent vintages. That’s not normal. And then there’s the price. $17.98. For a wine delivering this level of quality, that’s almost impossible to beat. If you want to understand what Malbec can really be, this is the bottle.
