The Castello di Monsanto Chianti Classico Riserva 2021 is a benchmark bottle from one of the most important and historically significant estates in Chianti Classico. Monsanto helped define the region decades ago, producing some of the very first single-vineyard Chiantis and sticking, stubbornly and proudly, to a classic Tuscan vision ever since. The 2021 vintage was close to ideal for Sangiovese: hot days to ripen the fruit, cool nights to lock in acidity and tension, and perfect conditions at harvest. The wine is 90 percent Sangiovese with 10 percent Canaiolo, fermented in stainless steel before aging in a combination of large oak foudres and neutral barrels for about 18 months. Everything here is about refinement, not excess. In the glass, this is textbook Chianti Classico turned up a notch: pure cherry fruit, savory Tuscan earth, spice, lift, and balance. It’s polished, layered, and deeply expressive without ever feeling heavy. The structure is there to age for 15 to 20 years, but the wine is already outrageously enjoyable now. Critics agree. This wine racked up multiple 95-point scores, which at this price level is almost unheard of. And here’s the kicker: we secured a one-shot deal at $29.98. Once the initial allocation is gone, the price will go up. This isn’t just a great Chianti Classico. It’s one of the defining wines of the 2021 vintage, and one of the smartest Italian buys you can make right now.
