That may be about to change. After decades of building Château Angélus into one of Bordeaux's most iconic estates, Hubert de Boüard decided to pursue a personal passion project. Inspired by his love of White Burgundy, he identified a small limestone-rich parcel at Château La Fleur de Boüard in Lalande-de-Pomerol and planted just two hectares of Chardonnay. It was an unconventional decision for Bordeaux, but one that made perfect sense once you understood the site. The soils are rich in limestone, clay, and sand, offering surprising similarities to some of Burgundy's great Chardonnay terroirs. Every cluster is hand harvested, fermented in French oak, and aged for 10 months in barrel, with only about 10% new oak, allowing texture and minerality to take center stage rather than overt wood influence. The result is remarkable. Blind, you'd never guess Bordeaux. The nose immediately evokes top-tier White Burgundy, with citrus, orchard fruit, crushed stone, subtle reduction, and beautifully integrated oak. On the palate, the wine is rich and textured without feeling heavy, combining vibrant acidity with a mineral backbone that keeps everything focused and energetic. It's the kind of Chardonnay that surprises you twice. First because it comes from Bordeaux. Second because it's genuinely outstanding. Production is tiny, around 800 cases, making this one of the rarest wines in Hubert de Boüard's portfolio. At just $28.98, it's also one of the most compelling Chardonnay values we've seen this year, especially considering many retailers are asking well over $40. If you're looking for something different this summer, something that will spark conversation the moment it's poured, this is exactly the kind of bottle we love to find.
