Founded in 1972, planted on the hillsides just below Howell Mountain before AVA boundaries even existed, Burgess always leaned toward structure, balance, and site expression rather than over-the-top power. These were mountain-influenced Cabernets built to age. In 2020, the estate was purchased by the Heitz Cellar group. Shortly after, the Glass Fire burned through the property. What survived was the library. Perfectly stored, pristine bottles representing a snapshot of Burgess before the replanting and rebuild. This is the 2014 Hillside Vineyards Estate Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2014 vintage in Napa often gets overlooked because it was sandwiched between 2012, 2013, and 2016. But 2014 is one of the most complete vintages of that era. Structured, balanced, and aging beautifully. The wines have a sweet core of black fruit with energy and polish rather than excess heat. In the glass, this shows classic hillside character. Black currant, dark cherry, subtle spice, and that peppery mineral streak you get climbing the slopes toward Howell Mountain. It is not a 16 percent blockbuster. It is 14.5 percent, composed, focused, and drinking beautifully with real bottle age. Vinous awarded it 94 points. The winery price was $145. Your price is $59.98. For a perfectly stored Napa library Cabernet from a historic estate, from a great vintage, at under $60, this is a serious opportunity. These are the kinds of wines that disappear quietly and are never seen again once the market tightens. If you love classic Napa Cabernet with age and authenticity, this is a very easy yes.
