Porseleinberg Syrah 2021 is the only wine we have ever committed to at this price without tasting first. And after opening it, we would do it again in a heartbeat. Porseleinberg is a single, massive hill of blue slate schist in South Africa, with barely a foot of topsoil in places. The vines struggle. The yields are tiny. The fruit is electric. The site was quietly known to top South African winemakers long before it had a name on a label. When Mark Kent acquired the property and began replanting, it quickly became clear that this hill was capable of producing something truly special. The wine is fermented with native yeast using a submerged cap in concrete, then aged in large foudres and a small amount of concrete egg. There is no oak flavor here, no makeup, no tricks. Just Syrah and place. The alcohol sits at a stunning 13.5 percent, proving that power and elegance are not opposites. In the glass, the wine is deep and commanding but incredibly precise. Pepper, meat, rhubarb, raspberry, slate, and savory spice all come together with a sense of tension and purity that is almost shocking. It feels like a collision of great Northern Rhône structure with New World fruit clarity, yet it is unmistakably its own thing. This is a wine that evolves by the minute in the glass. It is thrilling now and will be profound with age. Scores land in the high 90s for a reason. This is not hype. This is reality. We bought everything we could get. Quantities are tiny. If you love Syrah, this is one of the most important bottles you will drink this year.
