Not because they’re flashy. Not because they chase scores. Because they define a category so completely that everything else gets measured against them. That’s Alain Graillot Crozes-Hermitage. For decades, Graillot has been one of the benchmark producers of Northern Rhône Syrah, crafting wines that perfectly capture what great Crozes-Hermitage is supposed to be. And now, with Maxime Graillot carrying the torch forward, the wines remain every bit as compelling as they were when Alain first launched the domaine in the 1980s. This is classic Northern Rhône. Whole cluster fermentation. Minimal new oak. Transparency over power. The vineyards sit in the southern sector of Crozes-Hermitage, on stony, rocky soils that produce Syrah with both savory depth and freshness. The estate continually replants and refreshes its vineyard holdings, maintaining an average vine age around 30 to 35 years to preserve vitality and balance. And the wine? It smells exactly like Northern Rhône Syrah should. Blueberry, raspberry, smoked meat, cracked pepper, herbs, olive tapenade, and that unmistakable savory quality that makes great Syrah so addictive. There’s richness here, but also lift. Intensity, but also restraint. This is not overripe modern Syrah covered in oak. This is textbook Rhône. And that’s why sommeliers and collectors love it so much. For years, Graillot became so sought-after that much of the production disappeared almost entirely into restaurant programs. Retail allocations were incredibly difficult to secure. Now it’s finally available again. And honestly, if you want to understand why people obsess over Northern Rhône Syrah, this is one of the best places to start. This isn’t just a great wine. It’s one of the reference points for the entire category.
