They're found at estates that quietly transformed themselves while everyone else was looking somewhere else. That's exactly the story of Château Haut-Brisson. When Peter Kwok began assembling his remarkable collection of Right Bank estates in the late 1990s and early 2000s, Haut-Brisson quickly became one of the jewels of the portfolio. Working alongside renowned Bordeaux consultant Jean-Christophe Meyrou, the estate underwent a complete transformation, shifting its focus toward producing a single flagship wine with dramatically higher standards in both the vineyard and the cellar. The results speak for themselves. Today, Haut-Brisson is one of Saint-Émilion's most consistently impressive value estates, producing wines that routinely outperform their price point. The vineyard sits in the lower portion of Saint-Émilion, where veins of limestone extend toward the Dordogne River through a mix of clay, sand, and limestone soils. While the area doesn't always receive the same attention as the famous limestone plateau, estates like Haut-Brisson continue proving that exceptional terroir exists well beyond the most celebrated addresses. Then there's the vintage. The 2022 Bordeaux harvest has become one of the most exciting vintages in recent memory. Despite an exceptionally warm growing season, the best wines somehow combine richness, concentration, freshness, and remarkable balance. The 2022 Haut-Brisson captures everything that makes the vintage so compelling. Predominantly Merlot with a touch of Cabernet Franc, the wine was aged in a thoughtful mix of new, one-year-old, and two-year-old French oak, creating polish without overwhelming the fruit. Black cherry, plum, blackberry, violets, cocoa, and subtle spice lead into a palate that's plush yet remarkably energetic. What impressed us most wasn't the richness. It was the texture. The tannins are incredibly refined, giving the wine an almost seamless feel that makes it delicious today while still promising years of graceful development. Critics agreed. With 95 points from Alexandre Ma and 94 points from James Suckling, the 2022 stands among the strongest releases in the estate's history. And then there's the price. At around $30, it's hard to think of another Saint-Émilion offering this combination of pedigree, craftsmanship, critical acclaim, and sheer drinkability. Bordeaux has always been about finding the château before everyone else does. Haut-Brisson may not stay under the radar much longer.
