Why White Rioja Is Suddenly Exploding

For decades, the López de Lacalle family has been one of the defining names in modern Rioja, producing some of Spain’s most sought-after Tempranillo-based wines while largely ignoring the traditional rules that governed Rioja classification. They focused on vineyards instead. Site. Farming. Precision. Terroir. And over time, Artadi became one of the great modern classicist estates in Spain. What most people don’t realize is that they also make white wine. And honestly? This may be one of the biggest surprises we’ve tasted all year. The 2020 Artadi Viñas de Gain Blanco is sourced entirely from old vine Viura planted around Laguardia in Rioja Alavesa. But unlike traditional oxidative white Rioja styles, this wine takes a completely different path. Fermentation takes place in large used demi-muids, followed by an astonishing two full years aging on fine lees in stainless steel before additional bottle age prior to release. That aging changes everything. The wine develops incredible texture and depth without relying on heavy oak influence. Instead, you get purity, tension, and richness all working simultaneously. And the balance is remarkable. White stone fruit, citrus, apples, crushed rock minerality, and electric acidity layered over a supple, almost creamy texture that keeps pulling you back to the glass. It’s rich and vertical at the same time. That’s hard to do. And the more you sit with it, the more fascinating it becomes. There are flashes of great Muscadet here. Hints of white Burgundy. Even moments that recall López de Heredia Blanco. But ultimately, it feels completely its own. That’s what makes this wine special. Critics noticed too. Luis Gutiérrez at Wine Advocate highlighted the wine’s remarkably low pH and nervous energy, reinforcing just how age-worthy and serious this bottling really is. And make no mistake, this wine is built to evolve. Artadi even seals it with premium Diam 30 corks, signaling long-term aging potential and confidence in the wine’s future. At roughly six years from harvest, the wine is just starting to open up. And for the price? This is one of the most compelling white wine values coming out of Spain right now. The only downside is quantity. There isn’t much of it.
