That’s the rumored investment behind Bodega Garzón in Uruguay. Alejandro Bulgheroni built a world-class estate. Massive vineyards. Micro-parcel farming. Precision winemaking. A billionaire’s obsession project. And they chose Tannat. One of the most tannic, powerful grape varieties on the planet. Historically, Tannat was brutal. Massive structure. Unyielding tannins. Built for hearty French cuisine. But Garzón figured it out. Through meticulous vineyard work, refined extraction, and careful élevage, they’ve transformed Tannat into something plush, structured, and shockingly polished. The 2023 Tannat Reserva is loaded with blackberry, boysenberry, cassis, licorice, and spice. The color is electric purple. The tannins are powerful but velvety, with just enough grip to remind you what grape you’re drinking. Decanter awarded it 96 points at the World Wine Awards. 97 is their top score. This is essentially the second highest tier of recognition in a massive global blind tasting. The price? $16.98. For a wine of this scale, pedigree, and critical validation, that is absurd. If you want a cellar-worthy powerhouse red under $20, this is one of the best values on the market.
