Domaine de la Tour du Penet Cuvée 1872 is not just another Mâcon Chardonnay. It is made by the Ramonet family, one of the most revered names in all of white Burgundy. If that name alone gives you chills, you already understand why this wine matters. The cuvée is named 1872 as a tribute to the original plantings on the estate. While not every vine dates back that far, much of the fruit comes from 60 to over 100 year old Chardonnay vines, which is almost unheard of anywhere in Burgundy, let alone at this price. The vineyards sit in Mâcon Péronne, a terroir known for producing richer, more floral Chardonnay than the Côte de Beaune. What it lacks in limestone punch, it makes up for with texture, generosity, and charm. The Ramonet touch is what brings tension, precision, and balance into the equation. Winemaking here is intentionally restrained. A mix of stainless steel and large neutral oak is used to preserve purity and avoid overt oak influence. The goal is not flash. The goal is letting old vines speak. In the glass, the wine is deeply expressive. Honeyed florals, ripe orchard fruit, and a silky, mouth coating texture that immediately announces its pedigree. Then comes the surprise. A core of minerality and structure that forces you to slow down and pay attention. The wine has a center. It has gravity. This is not a wine that rushes you. It makes you wait. At around $30, this kind of depth, lineage, and old vine concentration is almost unheard of. We taste hundreds of white Burgundies every year, including many that cost three times as much. Very few have this kind of presence. Do not let the simple label fool you. This is serious wine made by one of Burgundy’s great families. Drink it now or slowly over the next five to seven years. Either way, this is one of those bottles you remember.
