Mailing list wines. Ninety dollar bottles. Rhône-inspired blends with cult followings. But what happens when one of the founding fathers of that movement decides to make a true value wine? Chris Cherry of Villa Creek has been part of the West Side Paso story from the very beginning. He planted the Maha Estate, built a reputation for serious Rhône-style blends, and helped shape what Paso Robles looks like today. The Farmhouse Red is where all that experience gets channeled into something you can actually open on a Tuesday night. The 2023 vintage in Paso was excellent, and this wine captures everything that makes the West Side special. The blend is 50 percent Grenache, 20 percent Syrah, 20 percent Zinfandel, and 10 percent Petite Sirah. All organically farmed. A portion comes from Chris’s own Maha Estate, with the rest sourced from like-minded growers who share the same farming philosophy. In the glass, this wine is juicy, gregarious, and full of personality. Dark red fruit, spice, a little West Side swagger, but with brightness and energy. It is not heavy or ponderous. It has lift. It has balance. It drinks like a mini Côte du Rhône with distinctly Paso character. Vinous awarded it 93 points. The price is $20. For a West Side Paso blend made by one of the pioneers of the region, that is a serious value. This is not grocery store Paso. This is intentional, thoughtful winemaking delivered at a price that makes sense. If you want one of the best Paso Robles reds under $20, this is an easy yes.
