But it is. When the Lawrence family purchased Heitz Cellar in 2018, Napa held its breath. This is one of the most historic wineries in the valley. The fear was obvious. Change the style and you ruin the legacy. Do nothing and people still complain. Instead, the Lawrence family and Carlton McCoy Jr. did the smartest thing possible. They did not touch the style. They became stewards, not editors. The 2021 Heitz Cellar Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is proof that restraint works. This wine is sourced from some of the best vineyard sites in Napa Valley, including Oakville, Rutherford, and St Helena. Much of the fruit is estate grown. Some of these vineyards could easily be bottled as single vineyard wines, and some already are. The winemaking is unapologetically classic. No malolactic fermentation. Very little new oak. Alcohol sits at 13.5 percent. That alone sets this wine apart in modern Napa. In the glass, this is unmistakably Heitz. Cedar, cassis, blackberry, graphite, and that classic Napa mineral note that makes you stop and say, yes, this is Napa. The acidity is vibrant but integrated. The tannins are polished but firm. The wine feels complete. Here is the kicker. Decanter Magazine recently tasted the entire Heitz lineup, including the single vineyard bottlings and older vintages. The wine that came out on top was this one. 99 points. Not the Martha’s Vineyard. Not the Trailside. The Napa Valley Cabernet. This wine is approachable now with air, but it will age effortlessly for twenty years or more. It tastes like the label. It tastes like history. It tastes like Napa Cabernet used to, and still should. If you love classic Napa Cabernet, this is non negotiable.
