This is one of those wines. The Mail Road Mount Carmel Pinot Noir 2018 comes from one of the most important vineyard sites in the Santa Rita Hills, a region known for producing some of the best Pinot Noir in California. The vineyard sits right next to legendary sites like Sanford & Benedict and in the same zone as top producers like Sea Smoke. That’s serious company. The winemaker is Matt Dees, one of the most respected names in California, known for his work at The Hilt and Jonata. And the approach here is pure. No new oak. Native yeast fermentation. Minimal intervention. The goal is simple. Let the vineyard speak. And with time, it really does. Now at around 8 years of age, this wine is entering a beautiful phase. Still vibrant and fresh, but beginning to show the complexity and nuance that only comes with bottle age. In the glass, it’s stunning. Ultra-ripe strawberry, red cherry, spice, and a layered, energetic profile that feels both rich and lifted at the same time. There’s a Burgundian quality here. A sense of finesse and detail that separates it from typical California Pinot Noir. Critics noticed. 97 points from Vinous and 96 points from Jeb Dunnuck, placing it firmly among the top wines of the region. The original price? $125. Today, it’s dramatically lower. For a wine of this pedigree, with this level of critical acclaim and bottle age, that’s an opportunity you don’t see often. If you love serious Pinot Noir, this is one you don’t overthink.
