This one wasn’t. The Bodega Rancho Grenache comes from Bennett Valley in Sonoma County, one of the coolest growing regions in California and home to some of the state’s best Rhône-style vineyards. This fruit doesn’t usually end up in $15 bottles. The vineyard sources grapes to producers like Carlisle and Myriad, wineries that sell their wines for significantly more. And somehow, this ended up here. The blend is built from two of the most important Grenache clones in California, Alban and Tablas, combining richness, color, and structure with spice and lift. And the timing couldn’t be better. At around 5 to 6 years of age, this wine is in its absolute sweet spot. The tannins have softened, the fruit has deepened, and everything has come into balance. In the glass, it delivers. Kirsch, dark berry fruit, a touch of fig, and a peppery spice note, all wrapped in a silky, generous texture that makes it incredibly easy to drink. This is not light, early-picked Grenache. This is fully ripe, expressive, classic-style Grenache with depth and character. Production was tiny. Just 135 cases made. Winery price was $65. Today, it’s $14.98. For a wine from this level of vineyard, with this kind of age and drinkability, that’s almost unheard of. This is the kind of bottle you grab without overthinking.
