So prestigious is the Cattier "Clos du Moulin" that Champagne guru Tom Stevenson devotes nearly an entire page to an elucidation of the history and evolution of this rare cuvée in his legendary reference guide entitled
World Encyclopedia of Champagne and Sparkling Wine. The Cattier "Clos du Moulin" is more accurately described as a "multi-vintage" (MV) blend. Utilizing three different vintages typically noted on the back of the bottle, Jean-Jacques Cattier, son of the iconic Jean Cattier, decided to elevate the quality of the "Clos du Moulin" through a rigorous selection process that yields less than 25,000 bottles. Each of the bottles are numbered.
This mono-cru Champagne is produced from a 2.2 hectare parcel of land called "Clos du Moulin" in the village of
Chigny-les-Roses that was purchased in 1951 by Jean Cattier and is one of the very few
Tête de Cuvée Champagne on the market produced entirely from one single vineyard plot. As such, it holds a unique place in the Champagne universe and is eminently worthy of pursuit by any and all who appreciate exceptional finesse, unique integrity and rewarding complexity whilst indulging in bubbles.
