94+ JG. " I have always been in lock step with much of the Burgundy cognoscenti in not ranking the Méo-Camuzet Clos Vougeot in the very top tier of examples of the vineyard, but the 1993 is stunning enough to give serious pause. The Méo-Camuzet style is really quite delicate for this vineyard (which often gave rise to comments that the wine just lacked the depth and power for grand cru), but in 1993 the intensity of flavor and palate authority are truly compelling. The nose explodes from the glass in a very Jayer-like mélange of red and black plums, black cherries, duck, dark berries, chocolate, earth and a judicious framing of fairly toasty oak. On the palate the wine is fullish, tangy and transparent, with beguiling plushness on the attack, a rock solid core of fruit, and great length and grip on the long, modestly tannic and quite tangy finish. This is a flat out terrific bottle of wine." John Gilman, View From the Cellar,Clos de Vougeot Forever Misunderstood, Aug 2008 |
