"The 2017 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Cailles has turned out beautifully, wafting from the glass with scents of sweet berries and plums mingled with blood orange, peonies and raw cocoa. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and layered, with a deep core of fruit, exquisitely refined tannins, lively acids and a long, perfumed finish, it's a magical bottle from Chevillon, and I'm happy to have a case in my cellar. Bertrand Chevillon reported yields some 50% below average in 2019 but was justly delighted with the quality of the wines. This is another powerful, structured vintage at this address, but the wines are more vibrant than the fine 2018s and more structurally refined, too. As I've written before, this is one of my favorite addresses in all of Burgundy. Old vines, cultivated soils, moderate yields and long fermentations with entirely destemmed grapes are the order of the day at this address, with the Nuits-Saint-Georges Vieilles Vignes seeing some 20% new oak and the premiers crus 30%. Nuits' Tonnellerie Sirugue is the dominant supplier of barrels."

2017 in Burgundy delivered generous yields and fresh, elegant wines; the whites are especially fine, bright and precise, while the reds are charming, supple and aromatic, drinking well relatively early.
A thin-skinned, terroir-sensitive red producing perfumed, silky and elegant wines of red-berry fruit and earthy complexity. It reaches its apogee in Burgundy.
