D'Arenberg's 2009 The Dead Arm Shiraz is evolving slowly and beautifully. Floral, dusty aromas akin to rose hips feature on the nose, followed by flavors of cranberries and chocolate. Still a bit tight and tart, it's full-bodied and velvety, with a long finish. Give it a little more time in the glass, and it opens up and reveals more cherry fruit. Reviewed by: Joe Czerwinski

Renowned for powerful, richly fruited Shiraz, most famously from the Barossa Valley, alongside age-worthy Cabernet and cool-climate whites. A warm climate and old, ungrafted vines produce wines of generosity and depth.
Syrah (Shiraz) produces dark, powerful reds with black fruit, pepper and smoked-meat notes. It yields elegant, perfumed wines in the northern Rhone and bold, rich styles in Australia.
