"After a chewy and youthful bottle of the ’83 Ducru that I reported on in the feature on this great estate last year, I was very happy to cross paths with a much more accessible bottle in preparation for this vintage report. I clearly underrated the wine last year, as this bottle emphatically demonstrates, as it soars from the glass is a deep, pure and nascently complex nose of cassis, dark berries, woodsmoke, a touch of Ducru nuttiness, beautifully complex, gravelly soil tones, a touch of juniper berry, Cuban tobacco and cedar. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and utterly refined, with a rock solid core of fruit, refined tannins, excellent focus and balance and outstanding length and grip on the elegant and utterly classic finish. A great vintage of Ducru in the making, the 1983 should still be cellared for several more years to allow it to fully blossom."

The world's most influential fine-wine producer and the benchmark for Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne and the Rhone. Its appellation (AOC) system codifies geography, grape and method, and its wines set the global standard for age-worthiness and terroir expression.
The world's largest fine-wine region, built around blends of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Divided by the Gironde estuary into the structured Left Bank and the plush, Merlot-led Right Bank, it is the historic benchmark for age-worthy claret and sweet Sauternes.
The world's most planted premium red grape, yielding deeply colored, tannic and structured wines with cassis, cedar and graphite notes. Firm tannins and acidity make it exceptionally age-worthy, whether as a varietal or the backbone of a Bordeaux blend.
Produces plush, supple, fruit-forward reds with plum and chocolate notes. Softer and earlier-maturing than Cabernet, it adds flesh and roundness to blends and stars in Right Bank Bordeaux.
