"Light bright red; looks about 40 years younger than it is. A multidimensional bouquet evokes cherry pit, smoky herbs, tobacco, cedar and dried rose, with a hint of orange peel in the background. Sappy, palate-coating and alluringly sweet, with creamy cherry and dark berry flavors and a velour-like texture. Becomes spicier and more exotically floral in the glass and, bizarrely, seems even fresher after a half hour of aeration. The finish strongly repeats the cherry and floral notes and hangs on with terrific energy and mineral-tinged sweetness. No way I'd have come within 20 years of guessing this wine's age."

Spain has the largest area under vine of any country and a deep tradition of oak-aged reds. Tempranillo-based wines from Rioja and Ribera del Duero, alongside Priorat's Garnacha and Carinena, anchor its fine-wine reputation.
Spain's noble red grape, producing structured, savory wines of red fruit and leather that respond beautifully to oak aging in Rioja and Ribera del Duero.
