"It is almost embarrassing how many recent notes I have on the 1985 vintage of Magdelaine. It is a brilliant example of both the vintage and this inimitable terroir and though I own the lion’s share still of the case I bought back in 2007, it is certainly not enough of the wine for my future needs! The bouquet offers up a brilliant and utterly pure constellation of cherries, red plums, menthol, tobacco leaf, a beautifully complex base of limestone, floral tones, nutskin and a touch of cedary wood. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, with great depth at the core, coupled to magical soil signature, great balance and refinement and a very, very long, perfectly focused, complex and tangy finish. There are still some tannins buried here, but they are so seamlessly ingrained in the body of the wine that it is very easy to drink the wine today, though I have no doubt that it is still a few years away from reaching its absolute apogee. A great vintage for Magdelaine and probably the perfect vintage to taste if one is still not convinced of the sheer brilliance of this wine in its heyday."

The world's most influential fine-wine producer and the benchmark for Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne and the Rhone. Its appellation (AOC) system codifies geography, grape and method, and its wines set the global standard for age-worthiness and terroir expression.
The world's largest fine-wine region, built around blends of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Divided by the Gironde estuary into the structured Left Bank and the plush, Merlot-led Right Bank, it is the historic benchmark for age-worthy claret and sweet Sauternes.
An aromatic red grape lending perfume, red fruit and a leafy, savory edge. It thrives in the Loire and as a key blending partner in Bordeaux, especially Saint-Emilion.
Produces plush, supple, fruit-forward reds with plum and chocolate notes. Softer and earlier-maturing than Cabernet, it adds flesh and roundness to blends and stars in Right Bank Bordeaux.
