"The 1998 Palmer is a blend of 52% Merlot, 43% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot. It is a wine that I have tasted three or four time though not since 2011. Thomas Duroux did not make this wine since he debuted in 2004, although he mentioned that it is one of his favourite vintages of this decade. I would agree. It has developed a very charming bouquet that is equidistant between primary and secondary aromas: blackberry, raspberry, cedar, crushed violet, leather and clove all beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine line of acidity and satisfying red fruit laced with black tea, clove, white pepper and just a hint of hung game. There is more freshness here than many of its peers and it just articulates Palmer with more clarity than other vintages during this era. At 20 years this Palmer has really blossomed. Tasted at the château."

The world's most influential fine-wine producer and the benchmark for Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne and the Rhone. Its appellation (AOC) system codifies geography, grape and method, and its wines set the global standard for age-worthiness and terroir expression.
The world's largest fine-wine region, built around blends of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Divided by the Gironde estuary into the structured Left Bank and the plush, Merlot-led Right Bank, it is the historic benchmark for age-worthy claret and sweet Sauternes.
The Left Bank appellation prized for perfumed, silky and elegant Cabernet-based wines. Gravel soils yield claret of aromatic finesse and refinement.
An aromatic red grape lending perfume, red fruit and a leafy, savory edge. It thrives in the Loire and as a key blending partner in Bordeaux, especially Saint-Emilion.
The world's most planted premium red grape, yielding deeply colored, tannic and structured wines with cassis, cedar and graphite notes. Firm tannins and acidity make it exceptionally age-worthy, whether as a varietal or the backbone of a Bordeaux blend.
Produces plush, supple, fruit-forward reds with plum and chocolate notes. Softer and earlier-maturing than Cabernet, it adds flesh and roundness to blends and stars in Right Bank Bordeaux.
A deeply colored, tannic Bordeaux blending grape adding color, structure and floral, spicy complexity in small proportions.
