"[Winemaker Peter] Heitz said the soil of the Fortuna vineyard also had its own unique role to play. Turnbull’s particular Fortuna parcel on the east side of the valley is composed of red volcanic clay and cobblestones at the top of the vineyard, fading into Bale loam clay at the western edge. Heitz said the position of the vineyard, combined with the planting orientation of the vines, offers an early-morning exposure to the sun that potentially optimizes the light while modulating the heat of the day as the sun moves to the west."
