"[The terrific 1998 Calbello Ardingo (a barrique-aged blend of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon) is an example of the stunning quality Merlot can achieve in Tuscany (in my view, unequaled anywhere in the world except Pomerol).] This opaque purple-colored 1998 boasts a knock-out nose of espresso-infused cherry jam as well as dense, full-bodied, unctuously-textured flavors that ooze across the palate. The new oak characteristics from barrique aging are completely concealed by the wine's wealth of fruit and extract. This intense, chewy, full-bodied, internationally-styled effort is in total contrast with the austere Brunello di Montalcinos produced by Costanti."

Italy grows more indigenous grape varieties than any other country and produces wine in all 20 of its regions. From Piedmont's Nebbiolo to Tuscany's Sangiovese, its finest wines pair structure and bright acidity with a strong sense of place.
The heartland of Sangiovese, producing Chianti Classico, Brunello di Montalcino and the Cabernet-influenced 'Super Tuscans' of the coast. Its wines balance bright acidity, savory structure and cellar-worthiness.
